I am sure you guys have probably spoken about this in the past but I would like 1st hand info from the coaches and/or those who have DD's that play overlapping sports.

My DD plays basketball and they have been practicing (running, weight lifting etc...) 4 days a week since the beginning of Sept before tryouts even start which makes sense because you can see the talent you are working with.

This made me think of how this will work because she also wants to play HS SB in the spring. When does HS start open gym/practicing for softball and do coaches work with girls that play other school sports or take in consideration that they might miss a practice for another school game.

good subject. early dead period is over, so you can start now on conditioning or drills with 8 or less. official practices start after valentines day. most of us will not interfere with other sports and take this into consideration. actually, we're not allowed to practice any girl who is playing another sport in our school. the only thing i hate is cheerleading tryouts. woman in our school always schedules tryouts the last two weeks of our softball schedule. blew up last year and will do it again this year, cheerleading is not considered a sport and should not interfere with anything, especiallly in our school. can ya tell i'm mad about this???? lol

Have seen more than one very good softball player whose second activity was cheerleading. Even with all-conference softball honors.

Davie County HS has the Tierney sisters. They both are outstanding ball players and cheerleaders. But I will say this, there were several times in the summer and early spring where it did interfere with softball.

I Had To Give My 2 Cents Worth On Subject

A kid by the time she is a Junior in highschool agree or disagree should decide what sport she is going to play if spots over-lap each other...I don't care how good your DD is in either sport...one or the other will suffer because your DD can not give 100% to both sports...Now if you don't believe me talk to a college coach and ask them if it impressess them that your DD plays multiple sports...they want to know what she excells in not that she is on the tennis team, basketball team, track team...etc.....and what if she is a great softball player and fractures her arm in volley ball because mommy and daddy want her to play every sport..c'mon there are some of you out there living your life through your daughter...there goes the possible athlectic scholarship monies over an injury......JUST DOESN"T MAKE SENSE TO ME !!!! I hear all the time that little Janey is tired........HELLO.....maybe little Janey is wore out from the 15 sports she plays.........our DD's are not machines...give little Janey a rest!!! Remember well rounded doesn't mean play 4 sports...it is talking about community service, grades, being a good student / citizen , helping others, being a good friend, involved in church, involved in different groups interacting with people and just showing LOVE.... not all want college ball

Guru, your comments sound like all HS athletes are only playing sports to seek a college athletic scholarship. That simply is not true. I don't have stat's but I would think that the % would be very very low compared to the total # of kids that play HS sports. Most kids, and many that play multiple sports, are out there for the fun of playing and competing because they truly like / love multiple sports. I would certainly not discourage a kid (even those actively seeking college scholarships in one sport) from playing more than one sport throughout their HS days if that's what they truly enjoy and this may motivate them in the classroom, in the community, satisfy or improve their own self-esteem, etc. Life can be too short to deprive a young person of their passions.

I do agree with your last part about your definition of "well-rounded".
