    isn't it

isn't it about 2 things on this topic in TB?:

in the young TB years, switching teams til you find one that the kid can start on & play all innings. this must be cases where the dad is not the coach.

    and

in the more serious later years of TB to find the right showcase team where the kid can be "seen" by the college coaches?

If you can find a competitive team that promotes individuals getting better, the team getting better, and you get 50% playing time or more I believe you are in good hands. Hopefully those type of teams will be playing in front of college coaches.

    Good point Charlie

Good point Charlie why would a tounament director list a tounament as a Showcase when they know or don"t expect college coaches to be there? {MONEY} perhaps, why not call it like it is a tounament most college coaches have already got 2007 under way. makes more sense to me to have Showcases from middle of June thru August when college coaches can attend. example Wilmington showcase on Sept. 23 I wasn"t there but talked to a coach that played there said he didn"t see any college coaches there

There is only one way a team can guarantee 100% playing time and that is to carry only 9 players. Most teams carry between 11 and 13 so at any given time someone may not be playing. I believe 50% playing time can be achieved in just about any situation...and sure, the highest caliber ball players will play more than those that are low on the depth chart. If that player that is low on the depth chart is getting better, working hard, and on a competive team I can see no reason for her to leave if she is getting at least 50% playing time...just my opinion.

don't most teams carry 11 players as a preferred #?

does the "guest" player arrangement usually work out? I've heard that term mentioned. is that like an "alternate" player to call on when regular players can't make it?

seems like if you can identify about 2-3 players that are about equal on skills & talent to rotate starting & getting PT on a near equal basis; do you find this to be achievable?

    TB gals

East of Raleigh,no pun intended, but with all your posts & questions here is a suggestion. Next summer pick out a TB girl on your HS team. Follow her through all her TB practices, go to her tournaments.I mean get a hotel room every night, eat out with them, the whole works. This way just maybe you'll see what goes on in the softball world, cause HS ball isn't close to TB. When you see the sacrifices these girls & their parents make to play ball, maybe it would open your eyes to a whole different world. I have loved every minute of it, & I have the upmost respect for these girls. When they could be out on the lake, or at the beach or mall with their friends, they are out in 98 degree heat all day giving it their all. I hope you take my suggestion, & you'll see why playing time, showcases, etc. are so important.

agree, well said softball nut. we started with 15 players on 14u, most of them 12 yrs old. finished with five from the original team. Only one in that five is playing in college. the older the team got, the fewer players we kept, but we've had weekends where we've pulled in "guest players". and yes, we've have a couple of "nomadic" players who've played on a dozen or so teams, looking for the right fit. Hey, when I coached, some of the "daddy" coached teams were the tough ones to beat. Not all dad's were coaching because they wanted their dd's to start every game. everyone will tell ya, that if either one of my kids (mo or rah rah) were having a bad day, i'd yank their but in a new york minute. our team had good advice from our organization pres (cfball) grades were the most important thing, it would take you farther. He was right.
