Let's give some props to the future.

Just got in from Crest Middle vs Chase Middle.

    Crest 41 Chase 0

Crest is 3-0 on the year and have outscored the other teams a combined
    101-6.

Crest has a kicker in the 8th grade that kicked 3 touchbacks in the Chase game. He warms up kicking 40 yrd field goals. They said that he tried a 50 in a game and came up just short.

Let's hear about some other schools.

I wished we had kickers like that in McDowell County. Although we have one in the youth league is just booming kicks like your kid. One coach in the McDowell County Youth Football League said, "It's not our job to coach kickers". I guess that's why our kicking game just reeks, and all MHS does is run the ball all game long. Not that I'm complaining watching Terrence Kincaid run for over 1,300 yards this season!

I don't remember the final score, but Kings Mountain Middle School beat Shelby Middle School by about two touchdowns this week. KM also beat Lincolnton and East Lincoln. Crest beat KM soundly. Crest looked like a varsity team. Future continues to look bright for Crest!

KM is 3-1 and plays West Lincoln this week.

Crest was the first game that KM played this year without any scrimmages. I would like to see these two teams play again, maybe it will happen in the championship game if KM could make it that far. I don't think KM could beat Crest without alot of breaks, however, I am sure it would be a better game than the first one.

Grandview Middle (Hickory) defeats Maiden Middle 24-22

    By Bob Duckworth
    Oct. 12, 2006

Grandview left Tom Brown Stadium on Wednesday evening with a come-from-behind 24-22 victory over the Maiden Wildcats.

On first down at the Maiden 15 yard line and 47 seconds remaining in the game, T. J. Wimbush took the handoff and veered to the right and simply outraced the Wildcat defense to the end zone. After a procedure penalty backed the Eagles up to the 7 yard line, quarterback Robert Whaley rolled out and threw a pass to Tyler Poole in the back of the end zone for the go ahead conversion. On the ensuing kickoff, Maiden was pinned inside their 20 yard line. On Maiden’s first play, Grandview’s Travis Stout fell on a Wildcat fumbled snap and the Eagles were victorious.

Maiden began the scoring in the first quarter as their fine halfback Johnson, who scored all three Wildcat touchdowns, ran around the right side from 13 yards out and then scored the conversion for an 8-0 Maiden lead with 3:13 left in the 1st quarter.

Grandview came right back down the field on a 67-yard scoring drive to tie the game. The drive included a critical fourth down pass play from Whaley to Poole. Wimbush scored the touchdown on a 6-yard run with 4:32 in the second quarter and Whaley passed to Garan Wilburn, after two procedure penalties, for the conversion to even the score.

After a kick off return by Maiden was returned due to a penalty, Grandview held Maiden on downs and took over the ball. Whaley then fumbled the ball over to the Wildcats with 1:17 remaining in the second quarter and just two plays later Johnson was off and running 16 yards to pay dirt. Their run for two was successful and Maiden led at the half, 16-8.

In the third quarter Maiden took the kickoff and was soon forced to punt. Grandview’s line rushed through and blocked the kick, recovering the ball on Maiden’s 22 yard line. After a Wimbush run to the 4 yard line set up a 1st and goal, Grandview could not move the ball and a fourth down pass by Michael Helms was intercepted in the end zone. Maiden ran the interception back out to the 26 yard line. Two plays later, Johnson was off on a 66-yard touchdown run. The try for two was stopped by the middle of the Eagle line and with 1:41 left in the 3rd period Maiden’s lead was 22-8.

On the ensuing kick off, Maiden made a mistake. They kicked the ball to Marcus Mayfield and he hit the middle seam and outran the Wildcat defense all the way for a 68-yard touchdown. Shaquan Reid scored the important two-point conversion and get Grandview to within 22-16 with 1:29 left in the third period.

After the kickoff Grandview played good, solid defense and held Maiden on downs to get the ball for only their second series of the second half. And that was all the Eagles needed. Behind some play calling that kept Maiden on their heels and some strong running by Reid and fullback Jake Meade, Grandview took the ball from their own 42 yard line until Wimbush scored the go ahead touchdown.

Leading the defensive charge was the entire line and especially end Montavious Sims. Other leading Eagle defenders were Poole, Wimbush, Stout, D.J. Mouzon, Alex Williams and Treston Heard.

Grandview improves to 3-1 for the season and will host Jacobs Fork next Wednesday.
