Now that college freshmen baseball & softball players have shed their HS letter jackets and gotten settled in "on campus" of our fine institutions of higher learning................how's it going? major adjustments? academics? sport?

My son, Josh, is at Clemson and loves it, but it's certainly been an adjustment. He has a heavy load with 16 hours this semester and is required to attend 2 hrs of study hall every night. Throw in 3-4 hours of practice and he can barely drag himself back to his apartment to get in bed....a lot different than HS.

NC will be well represented at Clemson this year with Will Boyd, Addison Johnson, DJ Mitchell and Josh (Thrailkill) all having a chance to play key roles this season.

    thanks.

WNCBB: great reply. congrats to your son & best wishes. I've always admired coach leggett's style; he seems to be top-notch. Just would like to see Clemson make better progress in the CWS sometime; maybe while your son is there? I guess that Leggett & Coach Tanner at USC are arch rivals, but with lots of mutual respect. I was a HS teammate of Coach Tanner, a great baseball guy and an even better person. thanks.

I talked with Dave Kopp's mom from down at Clemson. Her impression is that Clemson is loaded for bear this year. The only down side is that they don't have UNC on their schedule.

D'Allessio turned down his draft offer and returned to school for his senior season. Clemson has great team speed, very good power and a boat-load of quality arms. Omaha is definately in reach for them again.

    That's one really good team.

Braves - the Tigers should have another great year. The entire infield is back and 7 of 9 starters from last year's team return. Andy D'Alessio and Marquez Smith both turned down pro offers to return for their senior seasons. Josh, Addison Johnson, Will Boyd and DJ Mitchell have all played well this fall and will be in the mix come spring.

The pitching looks good with Daniel Moskos, PJ Zocchi, David Kopp, Ryan Hinson and Alex Martin back, along with newcomers Alan Farina (Juco), Josh and Graham Stoneburner adding depth to an experienced staff.

I'll be at the Orange and Purple Scrimmage tomorrow to get a firsthand look, but here's what the opening day lineup might look like based on what I've heard so far.

    Addison Johnson - LF
    Brad Chalk - CF
    Taylor Harbin - 2B
    Andy D'Alessio - 1B
    Marquez Smith - 3B
    Alex Burg - C
    Will Boyd - RF
    Stan Widmann - SS
    DJ Mitchell - DH
    David Kopp - P

I think D'Allessio's agreed to work on his bunting skills when we face Clemson ...

.. maybe the ball will only reach the warning track that way. (Geez he's got some power)
