For HS ball, what are acceptable reasons for absence from games & practices, with no discipline, punishment or penalty?

Obviously sickness &/or deaths in the family, but what about other school events, academics, what about entirely personal stuff like a birthday trip, others?

for a personal absence, does it make a difference if the player tells you about it several weeks in advance, maybe even before the season?

just wanted to see how various coaches handle this. are there understood penalties or discipline action for unapproved absences??

There are probably some academic events through the school that could probably be ruled as acceptable....but most, if not all, coaches have written rules and the applicable punishment that are given, received and signed by the players and their parents prior to the new season. There are no surprises.

From personal experience, there are no surprises.
It is discussed with the players and is sent home in writing as to the coaches expectations.

While some things may be considered as excused, that does not mean that junior will walk right back into the starting line-up.

Example: Junior became deathly ill with the flu last season, missing one practice. He showed up for the game the next day, but had to sit out the game.- Team Rule. He did not complain one time, because he understood the rules.

Our players get written rules about what is acceptable and what is not. In the end though I judge each on its individual merits. We are about educating our players, so I work with players when appropriate. That does not mean they aren't accountable and don't have to make up what they miss at practice.

    Again...

no "individual" surprises...each must be dealt on a case by case standpoint! We are dealing with individual and academics always takes precedent if legitimate! I ve had some sorry you know what players who have usd it as an excuse tho to skip practice tho! Should have cut em beforehand!

In the four years my son played HS ball I can't remember anyone missing a game for anything other than sickness and injury....some missed or were late for practice due to making up test or trying to get extra credit work to help and keep grades up.

    asking a specific case

I know HS teams have rules to follow on this issue & such rules are understood before season starts.
but for instance if a player comes to the coach before or early in season and provides a date for a game that he will be abscent due to an out of town personal "fun" trip, what would be your reaction as the coach? assume player is a starter.

I can't imagine anyone asking a coach that question, but if one did the reaction would be such, "Have a great time....see ya next tryout season":yikes:

    really?

really? expulsion from team?? is that too harsh? was thinking maybe hold them out of next game. any others comments on missing a game for a personal trip that player does not try to hide & informs the coach far in advance? ?

EOR....I may be wrong but I don't think you will get many "positive" replies if a player wants to miss a game for a "fun trip".

The Coaches I know and have know over the years try and build their teams on a "Team Concept" and not an "Individually Concept"....if a player, especially a starter asked to miss a game just to take a "fun trip" he would probably be viewed not just by the Coach but probably by his teammates as selfish and not caring about the team.

Most would probably cut him and if not cut him the player would have a hard time seeing the playing field again.:troll:
