I have read this board for quite some time now and this is my first post. I wanted to start out by thanking you all for the valuable information that you post. As we begin the recruiting process with my son, it is great to know that you have such valuable resources to fall back on.

Now to my question. This weekend my son went to his first showcase event at Wingate University. I was excited to see how many scouts were in attendance for the event. However, I was very disappointed in the amount of attention that they seemed to pay to the younger guys. While IF/OF was taking place, most scouts seemed to use the younger guys workout as a time to eat lunch and once they were done worked their way to the bullpens to prepare to see the seniors throw. After the seniors threw their bullpen, there seemed to be a large exit on the scouts part. The same after the seniors took BP. So here is my question, how much are scouts really looking at younger kids? I know my son enjoyed the experience and I am glad he got to be a part of it, but other than the experience, is it really worth it? Most of these events are very expensive and I just want to make sure he is getting the most out of them.

Once again, thanks for all the knowledge that you all provide us with as we begin this process.

    Younger kids

It all depends. If your son throws a 1.9 pop or shows outstanding arm strength or great speed then they notice. I can bet you that the Impact Staff noticed regardless of his age. They are looking for players at these events. Of course the college coaches are looking at the 07 players first because that is who they can go after right now. I feel it is great to get your young son out there and let him see what it is all about. I would hate to see a young man attend his first showcase when all the marbles were on the line. I saw some good looking young players. I also saw an 8th grader 2011 grad out there. Man that makes you feel old. And folks he more than held his own. Some would say why is he out there no one is going to look at this kid. Wrong. I bet you the Impact Staff did. And this kid got a great experience at a young age. How can that hurt him? I dont see how.

    Hey Coach.

You won't feel old until you get Braves age....:newsmile39:
You can bet if a young kids stands out he is noticed...I agree with Coach that the scouts are more focused on the 07 due to the fact they can go after them right now....underclassmen with good pop times, big bats or mid 80 or better fastballs were noticed by someone.

Great exposure for the younger kids...as Coach said, how can it hurt him?:twocents:

HitOneDeep- Glad to have you posting. That's what this board is for. There are so many members that have been through the recruiting process and to get them to share their experiences is a great help to us all.

There are some things to keep in mind when attending a "workout".

    1. Most coaches are checking out the senior guys, but they notice the younger one's as well. But in most cases, the younger one's aren't in their target radar right now. But believe me, they notice the one's that standout.

    2. It's a great experience to attend a "workout" and Impact does a pretty good job with these. It gives your son a chance to see how these things work, plus it gives him a chance to see where they stand with the competition.

    3. Don't let your feelings get hurt when the coaches don't talk to you at these events. They can't. I remember I was walking up to Kyle Shelton's dad who was talking to Chad Holbrook with UNC. When I came up, Chad suddenly took off (I know, Dbacks, I have that affect on many people). He told me later it was because he couldn't be seen talking to me at that time.

Again, HitOneDeep, great question and keep on postin'....You are what we are about
