Correct swing starts with correct hand and feet position --- cock bottom hand to even up knuckles....(notice bat behind her head).....never put back behind head---always angle bat slightly toward catcher-----always throw hands to the ball ,never barrel...and I disagree about collaspe...when rotating the hips with wipping action collasping causing more momentum or power into the swing...(her step is too far)...most coaches now days tell you know more than 6 inch, and not to step at all if you don't have to...Believe it or not coaches are teaching the baseball swing to softball players, because of the impact swing...keeping the elbow in (wing down), this actually torques the swing for maxium power....her weight looks a little forward ,but not enough to effect her swing...other than that she looks pretty mechanical correct....GURU

How can the wrists be cocked if the bat is angled toward the catcher?

What is meant by “throwing the hands to the ball”? Don’t you hit it with the barrel?

Why is her step too far? Isn’t stride personal preference? Does stride have anything to do with weight transfer to the front side?

Why would there be any difference between BB and SB when swinging a bat?

How does keeping the elbow in add torque to anything?

    Just asking.

Guru: Collapsing causes the swing plane to angle UP.. resulting in more lift and more pop ups and fly balls... don't get me wrong I am NOT one of these FP guys who wants everything hit on the ground... Line drives with the focus being on up the middle should be the goal.

    Baseball swing vs. softball swing

This subject has been debated with me for years. However IMO, there is no difference between a baseball swing or softball swing or the way they are taught. There is no difference between a female golfer's swing compared to a male golfer's swing and there isn't a difference in baseball vs. softball.

However, there are a couple of things that do need to be considered in the approach to hitting in softball. The angle(s) the ball approaches the batter (the boys need a mound to get speed on their pitches!) and that softball is more of a contact type game than baseball. I have always said the main difference between baseball and softball is that in baseball you try to outscore your opponent. In softball, you try to make your opponent make more mistakes than you. The scoring will take care of itself.

good point bmac, and to me, right on the money. for years, we have taught our kids to put the ball in play, good things happen when you put it in play. my kids are taught to make contact with the ball, put it in the gaps, and dont go for the fence (most dont make it to the fence when ya try)

A voice of reason..... Thank you for finally saying it.
Now we just have to convince the rest of the world

Check out the hitting series below...
Amanda Freed and then two MLB players...,
which both have different styles..Ichiro and Miguel Cabrera..

I have attached a red dot at each of their body centers ( belly button )
This will track the movement generated; 1st in negative movement and then in positive movement through the hitting zone. Amanda generates the negative movement with her stride, while the two MLB players use their knees and hips...
Look at their back foot... Notice that they all step through the zone as they swing... No Spinning or squashing the bug...
Their drive foot is at a 90 degree angle from the ground at contact....

Can't wait to hear your comments

Betterbatter---look at what Windmill has given you----never said kid couldn't hit....chageup asked a ??? for discussion.....

Exactly what I said notice knob (hands) to the ball, and check the young ladies Collapse ---- good power to the ball---- no hip power, means no distance---and apparantly she hits the ball well.....trust me elbow stays down, and in toward the body this will give the batter more torque on the swing...the weight does not transfer to the front foot during the swing, the weight is suppose to stay back on the back foot...look at your power hitters they are all collasped and back....too much stride causes lose of balance, and power off the swing...but you may have a good point about preference...GURU

    Responding to Hitting Series

I teach hitting. Can stick it pretty good myself! Trained my daughter. She was 2006 Southern Conference Player of the Year;First in school history. She was also 2006 SoCon Tournament's MVP.She broke 12 school records.(See featured article on us at www.fayobserver.com, titled "Black Blossoms With Help of Dad"--go to Archives section). The most important thing about hitting is Timing.Timing means getting ready, loading up,to meet the ball at the contact point. There are many techniques used to accomplish this.In the hitting series each batter does something with the front foot to get ready to step into the ball. The step and contact should be at the same time. The step should be straight down with some force behind it.This serves as a resistance, giving you a hit on the ball.Step too soon, there is no resistance,so all you have is a swing. If contact is made, there will be very little power.A pitcher gets her wrist snap off her front foot;a batter gets her hit off the plant of the front foot. There is a difference between hitting the ball and "swinging" at the ball. The majority of girls are not successful hitters because they "swing" at the ball. You can get away with that at the lower level, but if you want to play college ball, you must be able to handle pitchers pitching 70 MPH.
