who are considered the best coaches / teachers of the girls game in NC? the ones that really teach and transform average players coming up from the midd school ranks and mold them into outstanding team-oriented play with sound basketball skills and fundamentals.

and also, where does NC stack up for girls HS basketball in the US for overall talent, outstanding coaching, etc ?

I will be posting an interview from a coach that I feel fits the mold. Coach Troy Gaston, South Meck State 4A champions.

Tom Wright, the former coach at Watauga, should get some recognition. He won more games than any coach there and led the girls to a sectional final in 1996. The following year, they posted an 18 - 7 record and did not get in the playoffs because they finished third behind McDowell and Freedom. To top that off, His team finished 17-8 the next year. Only had 1 losing season if I remember correctly.

He was a great teacher of the game and cared dearly for the players he coached.

Just thought his name should be mentioned.

Mike Silver (McDowell), and the guy from TC Roberson is good. These are some of the ones who have been at it awhile. There's some good young ones out there, too.

    NC Ranking.

This link might tell you where NC girls basketball stands up against others around the country.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/basketball/super25w.htm

The only NC school listed is Providence Day which ranks in the top 10. There seems to be a lot of private schools listed in the top 25.

Question - (CMS) Is there a reason that private schools do not play against public schools and/or why some mecklenburg schools don't play against other counties like Union or Cabbarrus, if they are in the same conference/county/district?

Someone on another board brought up this point and I thought was really interesting because how can you really if a school has an exceptional team if they aren't allowed to compete w/ the areas top schools because theya re private or in a different county. For example, who would be the best out of Providence Day or South Meck.

BTW, the Butler Varisity/JV girls seem to be doing very well this year so far.

The Butler Varsity Girls are starting to gel and play well, despite battling some injuries. I have attended most of their games and do not have a daughter playing so I have a pretty objective viewpoint. This is a young, well coached team that will be strong this year and each of the next two years.

What school district did you guys end up moving into?

Although they may play each other in a Holiday type tournament, public and private schools are not allowed to schedule each other according to NCHSAA rules.
