EAST BURKE AND ALEXANDER CENTRAL HOOPS

Does anyone know how the East Burke and Alexander Central Men and Women did at the Catawba Holiday Classic. I know the East Burke Men and Women were both playing for fifth. The Alexander Central Men were playing for third. I saw the Alexander Central Women lost to Bunker Hill. How did they do against Fred T. Foard in the consolation round? I could use some help. Thank you as always.

    watauga tournament

The Watauga men and women both lost last night. T.C. Roberson beat the WHS women 63-31; T.C. Roberson beat the WHS men 77-68. Maria Young of TCR was the tournament's MVP for the women, and Patrick Crouch of TCR was the MVP in the men's tournament. The WHS women are 3-9; the men are 7-5.

Watauga beat a weak West Stokes team in the opening round 67-42 and then lost to TCR 63-31 in the championship. It is a shame that we lost to TCR by 32 points. They are a better team than us and are coached better. But not 32 points better. WHS needs to work on fundamentals!

Wataugas girls problem is that they can't hit shots 3 feet from the basket. I have never seen a team that can get so many good looks at the basket and miss. They also cannot grab a rebound to save their lives.

The problem at WHS is that the players do not believe in their coach. They have lost all respect for him as a coach. The players do not like playing for him and do not like playing with each other. They will just go through the motions for the rest of the year. Don't look for them to win more than 1 or 2 more games. It's a shame!

Coming from a guy who has seen every game this season except South Caldwell (in Chattanooga), WHS problems run much deeper than the head coach. You cannot coach what you do not have. He's at the end of his ropes. There is nothing left to do when your team consistantly has the same problems every game. When you say WHS needs to work on fundamentals boy you aint kidding. However this is stuff that should be taught at the JV and middle school level. By the time you are a varsity high school basketball player you should be able to dribble and shoot within 5 feet of the hoop. They will shock somebody on a random night, don't be surprised if its ACR this Friday. I guess Tuesday we will see how bad things really are. I hope its not 100-40 but I fear it will be.

I agree with you on some points and on others I do not. I have seen 90% or so of the games so I know what I am talking about. Alot of the mistakes that they are making are because they don't care anymore and are not trying to correct them. They just want the season to be over. This is the most talented group that has been in the program in a few years. I truly believe that they could have won 10 games easy this year. Now they might get 5 if they are lucky or decide to start playing.

Yes, you should not have to work on fundamentals alot at the Varsity level. But our middleschool program is a joke. Over half the coaches do not know what they are doing and are just there because no one else would coach. If Watauga County went to one MS team then you would see an improvement in the fundamentals of the girls when the reach HS.

Last thing, why are the seniors the true loser in the equation? Other girls have invested as much or more than they have into the program. Yes, it is the seniors last chance to play, but will the situation get better next year with the same coach?? I seriously doubt it. Its a shame for all the girls not just the seniors.

I too hope that Watauga keeps it respectable tomorrow. Just keep them under 100!

Your first paragraph is right on, minus the this team could have won 10 games. They are still making the fundamental mistakes that they made last year and thats preventing them from winning period. This team was never gonna win 10 games and the unrealistic expectations that everyone gave this team is quite a joke.

As far as the middle school program being a joke, I quite agree. Fundamentals like shooting properly and catching a ball should not have to be taught now.

The reason the seniors are the true loser is that this is it for them. Throughout there career they have won 5 games a year for there four years of basketball. 5 GAMES!!!! The freshman have 3 more years that they can turn this ship around. I would like to see more success for these girls. They certainly deserve it.

2 hours and 50 minutes until departure for the lovely town of Marion. Maybe tonight we can come back here and talk about one of the biggest upsets in school history but at least hopefully we can talk about respectability.
