Ideas- Increasing The Number of High School Games Allowed In A Week

Agreed....and that's what makes HS sports an experience that is not gained from anywhere else.

 

Intense rivalries, large crowds: North Davidson vs about half the teams they play, conference or non-conference.

 

Which brings me back to my original question. Why would someone want to skip this opportunity to play TB during the school season?

 

Most wouldnt........only a few fanatic parents.

 

Are you saying play HS during the week and TB on weekends during the spring HS season?

No pitcher can stand that much work without eventual injury. To expect a pitcher to throw 2-3 HS games per week, go through the necessary work-out routines during HS practice, then pitch 4-5 games in a TB week-end is crazy.

TB does contribute to healthy HS rivalries and friendship between players of opposing teams. But TB and HS ball should not overlap.

 

There is no way I would ever support doing away with or reducing HS games. Some of the best games I have attended in ANY sports have been the West Forsyth-North Davidson softball games over the past few years. Just about every time these teams woud play, either the regular season championship, conference tournament or trip to Raleigh was on the line.

ND has the best softball fans (some of the students however......just kidding) in our part of the state. Their fans come to the field hours before games and set up their chairs on the home and visitor side behind the back stop and you better not move them. They also have fans that don't have daughters playing and they travel with the team everywhere they go. I have never seen this much intensity in TB.

As a matter of fact, when Coach Chandler's Cardinals were playing in KY at the ASA 18U National Championship game this past summer, I bet their weren't more than 100 people there that weren't a parent or ASA official. And that game was as intense (final score 1-0) as any I have ever been involved in. However, in the Indepence Day tourney in CO, there are tons of fans and last year almost 350 college coaches.

Back to the topic. HS teams should be allowed the opportunity to play and compete in a tournament or two a year. They are fun plus you play against better competition and that will pay off later in the year. Also, as was mentioned earlier, most of these tournaments are over spring break anyway, so it would not interfere with school.

I don't think anyone is wanting to turn HS ball into TB. Both have different purposes and there is good and bad to both. It's just that I think the NCHSAA is comparing HS baseball to HS softball. IMO,they are making decisions on the basis the two sports are exactly the same and take the same amount of time to play.

 

I'm not sure how you could have misread my post based on my other posts in this thread. What I asked in this and other posts is how could someone want to skip HS softball in lieu of playing TB instead.

 

Quite frankly, NCHSAA doesn't spend much time distinguishing between the two sports. If it was entirely up to them, they would do away with all Spring sports. The simple truth is spring sports is a financial drain for many HS. If it wasn't for NCBCA and apparently softball trying to do the same thing, there would be no voice in the decision making at the NCHSAA. They would prefer to have football and basketball only and leave the other sports up to club teams. If it wasn't for the dedication and commitment from the HS coaches to maintain their fields and seek support from boosters to help in equipment and things, many schools will furnish the coach with a couple of dozen balls and say "have fun".

 

I'm pretty new to the softball world as my daughter just went through her first year of Middle School softball....

I may have missed this in the thread but why don't the High School softball teams play in Easter Tournaments like the boys baseball teams?

 

Their are a few of these played each year. East Gaston played last year, and will play again this season in an 8 team tournament at West Brunswick High School during spring break. 3 games in 3 days. 1st through 8th determined using the same format as most Easter baseball tournaments in NC. I think some Gaston County schools used to host one as well in the past.
