Politics in High School Baseball

Do you think this goes on a lot or is more isolated? I know in the four years my son was in HS there were Seniors that sat the bench each year and the underclassmen played.

I'd say if their skills and what they bring to the team are basically the same, the senior should start and play the majority of innings and the underclassman should be substituted in as much as possible.

 

I think you win and lose with your seniors and if you got underclassmen that are that much more talented then some seniors, then thats a whole different story....Talent should be played regardless of seniority but there will be some times, when seniority will outplay talent....

 

just to play devil's advocate here. if your sr's and under classmen are equal then why play sr's? the sr is as good as he's going to get as far as high school goes but your underclassmen are equal in talent and skill and they have time to get better. why have new starters every year when you can put out an equally good team with players who have a chance to improve and at least will be back next year?

I'd say the sr has "earned" his spot to play over the long haul; maybe he's watched from the bench in previous year(s) but also been loyal to the program and worked his butt off for his chance to play. ..........now if there's equality with a sr and an underclassman, the senior should play.

So are you saying a senior who has paid his dues for 4 years and is as equally good and for sure, a little more experienced, but because he is a senior and its his last year that he should take a seat because he probably won't get any better? .....Whose to say the senior don't take it up a notch his last year and get better and better ....Just because he is a senior doesn't mean he has reached his potential and he is as good as he is going to get..........
the seniors that are starting have been (I'm sure) playing together for a while and the underclassmen will get there chance as the season goes on as well.....If your seniors are equally as good as the underclassmen, they should get the nod to play more because it is there last year and they do have more experience and they have paid their dues....If the underclassman is that much better, then he deserves to play and the senior will probably understand, but to say the senior sits because he's done after the year anyway and he has no room to improve?? Not in my opinion.... Why play for next year when you can play for this year, or at least until you get to the part of the season when you know its about next year...!

If the Senior and Underclassman are of equal talent I would look for the deciding factor from the Senior to be can he provide "leadership" for the team....if so I would have him on the field....just my

 

I would add that being loyal to a senior especially if they are equal may be a priority, providing all things are equal. As the season progresses then this may change, but IMHO you could make it "his to lose", then if is beat out, then so be it!

 

I think that is why we have JV's.

 

Where does JV ball mean anything? Everybody knows that Varsity is all that counts so I like Dbacks approach
