    sad but

sad but not surprised. such is the case with many volunteer organizations now. it's a bear to get people to really work at something like this.

you know, they even had daddy ball back in the day. that's how this league got started if you read the first paragraph or two.

    Government & Politics

Same kind of thing happened in Cornelius, N.C. America Legion Post gave land to the city where a ball field was at, and it was to be for youth baseball; next thing we knew adult softball had half the time slots for games. This really hurt our 13 & 14 year olds. Funny thing our agreement with the city was a hand shake. Oh how times have changed!!!!!????:detonate: :newsmile60: :headslap:

    Its happenig everywhere

This situation is happening everywhere. Youth leagues are being constantly harrassed by their respective Parks and Rec depts, crazed parents and "respective" politicians. (Hopefully not to the extent as the events in Asheville). It is funny that those that do most of the complaining are those that do not want to participate in the improvement process, by volunteering their time and services.

It takes a lot of enthusiastic people to provide a successful youth program. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for everyone. Rarely do those few that do all the work get a pat on the back for doing a good job.

As an organization, are you going to make everybody happy- NO
My beautiful wife watched while our organization fought diligently with Parks and Recreation Depts, competing organizations (field space), and selfish parents. She often wandered why I would putup with it, and told me that it was no longer about the kids, but all our individual egos & misguided perceptions.

I feel horrible about the way it has ended for those involved in the youth program in Asheville. I hope it wakes us all up & shows us that it can be taken away. I would hope that each of would forward this to our respective Rec leagues.

    Thanks for posting this article.

    do you

do you feel this type of "mess" with local rec leagues lead to parents and kids towards getting involved at a younger age with travel teams?

They can co-exist, this IMO, is a situation where the City Parks and Rec dropped the ball. Thats just my opinion from what my friends up there have told me.

This is part of the reason parents get involved with travel teams. In our area kids were playing travel ball because parents wanted their kids to "play with kids that could catch, hit & throw"; and their kid was not going to improve by playing in the local rec league with little seven little Johnnys that cant catch.

    Twisted, isn't it...

I agree with Hatfield that both can exist. Organizations all over Mecklenburg County are trying ways to make both work. Some are offering weekday rec teams, and travel teams for weekends that are made up of strong players from the league (all-stars)

How are others dealing with combining Rec & Travel ball?
