I have heard from a strong source that Lonnie Chisenhall has an excellent chance to be the starting 3rd B this year for the Gamecocks.

    Thanks, Prepster

Thanks, Prepster for the insight. You have great information. Another question for all of you who have first hand experience...what are the advantages-disadvantages of red-shirting as a freshman?

Many thanks, baseballfanforlife. We all took a lot of information coming up, and many of us try to pass along as much as we can.

Red-shirting in baseball is different than its counterpart in football, where it's practiced routinely. In most situations, baseball red-shirting is limited to health or academic causes; rather than because it's felt that the player will be better off with a year's additional maturity. With only 11.7 scholarships to spread around (fully funded at the DI level), coaches simply don't have the luxury of retaining developing players via the red-shirt route.

In the rare instances where a developing player is red-shirted, he needs to keep in mind that a wave of new recruits is coming in the following year; and many of them will be ready to play right away. It's easy to become overlooked in that environment.

Well..................it's still a little early and I'm certainly not the coach, but after watching a intersquad scrimmage yeaterday Nick Liles looks pretty solid at 3B for Western Carolina. I think he still has a few adjustment to make to the college game, but I think he's the odd on guy to at least start the season there.

Don't be surprized if Dustin Ackley and Kyle Seager start at 1st base and 2nd base, respectively, when UNC opens its season on 2/16. That's an impressive accomplishment in the face of a pretty talented lineup!

Congrats to both! It's nice to see their hard work pay off!

:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
