SC ASA , doesn't look good for Carolina teams.....

No wonder I did not see many teams , ONE from SC , none from NC,at the 14U ASA Nationals in TN. last summer! Teams from GA take berths from SC, FL, GA,and AL....maybe you could open it up to more than 16 teams and the weaker Carolina teams may even get a chance to qualify?

I am not trying to sound rude at all, but how would expanding the tournament help the weaker "Carolina" teams get to the Nationals? Believe me I would love to see more Carolina teams go to the ASA Nationals and see what a BIG difference it is compared to the other associations World Series.

Another thing I would like to add is that when it comes to ASA Tournaments, the Georgia teams (much like West Coast) do not hesitate to enter, they do it very quickly, and then the tournaments fill up fast with the majority being GA teams. To help solve this, the "Carolina" teams need to jump in and enter as soon as they are released instead of waiting and maybe we could fill these tournaments with Carolina teams and then the berths could go to Carolina teams.

Also all the teams listed have not paid yet, so it is still very open to whoever wants to enter.

How many times has it come up that a team says they are going to play in a tourny and then backs out?

My comment would be to not list any teams unless they have paid.

    Solution for NC

The solution for the NC teams to have more chances to qualify for nationals is fairly simple in two ways. The first being we must get as many NC teams as possible to INDIVIDUALLY register with ASA. The second, have more teams play in the ASA State tournament.

The more teams in a state that register their players individually, the more qualifier tournaments ASA will award for NC. I believe we (NC ASA Fastpitch) will be able to decide when and where to hold any qualifiers we are awarded. By us knowing the dates, we should be able to get word to the NC teams just a little sooner. But again, we must increase the number of NC teams that individually register.

This year teams can play ASA by doing a team registration (just completing a roster and sending it in with $30.) however ASA does not count team registrations toward awarding quailifiers, plus you must still buy separate insurance. Next year we are asking all team to register their players individually to get our numbers up. But for those who will individually register this year, that will give us a head start, and there are benefits for the teams that do this.

Registering ASA individually takes a few minutes more than other sanctions but once you have done it, it's easy. The cost to register each player is $15. But with the $15, teams also get their team liability insurance (good for ALL sanctions) and the coach recieves 2 sets of picture ID cards, each player gets a card and the coach keeps the others. The number that is assigned to each player stays with her throughout her ASA career, no matter what ASA team she may play for. Plus for the coaches, the card take the place of the birth certificates as before the card is issued, the birth certificate is verified by the NC ASA JO commissioner (Rick McHone).

Here is a link to the NC ASA Fastpitch web site. On the site there is a link to the "Virtual Tournament Director" that will allow teams to register players individually. You will need at some point to complete the registration a digital photo of each player on your team to upload for the ID cards. www.ncasafastpitch.com

As I mentioned earlier, teams that are interested in qualifing for ASA Nationals should play in the state tournament. Only NC teams can play, so that eliminates teams from outside coming in. Right now, we only have one berth per age group, but that too could increase in the future with more NC ASA teams. But as SC-ASA mentioned, the quality of the teams in ASA Nationals is superior to what you will find in other sanctions. Plus ALL of the teams in the ASA nationals you MUST win a berth in to particiapte. That's not really the case in other sanctions.

One last thing to consider about the GA teams signing up before the Carolina Teams- GA plays their high school ball in the fall, so in the spring the 14U-18U GA teams can register in as many qualifiers as they can long before the NC & SC teams even finished putting their teams together.

If anyone one has any questions on registering or playing ASA this year, they can contact me, Ben McKinney at [email protected] or Rick McHone at [email protected]

Very good points made regarding geting more National berths for your state. He is correct in that the more teams that register ASA the more "State" berths you are awarded. Currently NC & SC only get 1 State berth for each age group which is generally given out at the State Tournaments, but GA has enough registered teams that they receive 2 berths per age group and they hold seperate tournaments to give out theses berths and usually 20-24 teams per age group sign up for these and battle all weekend to EARN a berth to the Nationals.

This is not a flame towards any other association, but usually ASA Qualifiers are just as, if not more competitive than the others "World Series".... and the ASA "A" Nationals are just an out of this world experience. I believe "most" teams goals are to eventually get their players prepared to play college softball and to get recruited. If you go to a 16u or 18u ASA "A" National the college coaches by the hundreds are there. Not so sure about the other associations... Also just speaking for the tournaments that we host in the Upstate of SC, we generally have 5-6 college coaches show up at our tournaments that are not even qualifiers if we have a good turnout of 16u or 18u teams, which we definitely did last year.

SC-ASA is correct about ASA exposure and competition. In traveling with the Coach Chandler's 18U Cardinals the past few years, I have seen first hand the number of college coaches at ASA tournaments.

Last July at the Independence Day tournament in CO, 344 college coaches signed in. In the 18U nationals in KY, there were at least a 100, then most of those left midweek to go to Seattle to watch the 16U ASA Nationals.

The more local showcase tournaments such as the Cardinals Early Bird, Cardinal Classic, Hot Times, Dynamites, ASA State and others, there are always lots of college coaches watching both the 16U & 18U teams play.
