    thanks & agree

thanks . the emotions you mentioned are right on the money.........I am experiencing them now. Time will take care of all this. I bet there are people reading this that may be downplaying this issue, but you just don't know until you experience it firsthand. Really I could not sleep well the first few nights after she told me.

what?? tennis for both our DDs was just as important as softball, band, beta club, FCA, Deb Ball, Girls State, church choir, drama and all the other activities they choice to participate in.......they decided and we supported!

her coach at the time she decided to play tennis wasnt a factor in her decision. HER personal choice cheeze.
    memory is blurring abit ahhhhhhhh??

steelergal, Agreed.....academics is the key, the extra stuff is just prep work for life's challenges!

    Yeah, you're right

had to really think about time frame, and you're right, coach i was thinking about left prior to decision. memory isnt the only thing that is getting blurry ..... lol. Em was one heck of a pitcher, unfortunately, never had the opportunity to see Jennifer play, but have been told she had it going on. point was that you have to stand behind your daughters decision, even if it makes no sense to you, or hurts your feelings badly, after all, she's still your daughter. . . right??

    Celebrate!

Mine's a Senior. Played travel forever. HS team pretty strong. Told me in her Jr. year did not want to pursue college ball. I took her out to dinner. All else in her life has more meaning now as she is able to focus on other more meaningful things. And her ability to make that decision is a good sign of maturity, etc.- she's just growing up. Sounds to me like you done O.K., Dad.

I hope that parents of middle school age and underclassman girls are carefully reading what is being said by those who have been "through the ringer". All the truth you ever need to know going forward is being said right here!

Too often as parents we try to impose our likes/interest on our children. The closer an activity relates to what we want and are interested in, the more we support it. One of my proudest moments was when my daughter came off the stage at a dance recital and sit with me, leaned over and said,"I don't think I want to do this anymore." I was elated. Hated every minute of all dance. I don't think my reaction will be the same with softball, but I know that for her sake my reaction can only be one of genuine support. The benefits of softball are the means to an end, not the end product. The goal is to allow young people to realize and reach their fullest potential as an individual in whatever endeavor they choose to pursue.

    Feel You Pain

I like most of the people posting here have children playing every sport known to mankind, in school and traveling. My wife and I contribute willingly as most, without question and reguards to cost. This will be my first year not coaching, making the situtation (sports family) a little harder. The only advice I can give is what I've told my kids.
"When and if it becomes no fun, then it's time to stop." I guess I have set my self and my family up for the possibility of a sport career ended. EOR, it will all work out.

    thanks

I agree with what your saying, but when those words are actually spoken "I don't want to play anymore", it's real tough. especially when they have eligibility remaining.............your impression is they have given up, which is something our society discourages.

Without getting too involved in this, I think she, and you, should consider what her coaches and teammates have to say. Allowing her to quit at such a young age could possibly send the wrong message. Of course, if she just doesn't want to do it, then she won't have the right attitude. I really don't think there is anything wrong with pushing kids to do something. I just happen to prefer softball over football/tennis/golf/soccer/almost any sport. I do like basketball and volleyball, though. Just don't try to do all 3.

I hate to, in some ways, disagree here, but if it wasn't a burden, there probably won't be any relief in giving it up.
