What a McDowell crowd at Icard tonight. We had one whole side full and part of the Freedom Side and we got to see a great game. Freedon jumped out to a 28-12 lead early in the 2nd period but the lady Titans fought back and cut it to 2 at the half. The lady Titans came out in the second half and played with the heart of champions. Washington took over, scoring 30 points. Freedom had 2 technical fouls called on them and the lady titans pulled away at the end. It's on to Winston Salem for both the lady titans and the titans. What a year. POY-washington Coach of the year -Silver,although we already know that want happen.:bluegrab:

    Freedom 59

I would like to say a few things tonight in regards to Freedom/McDowell...

First off I think we, the NW4A fans, need to be proud of the effort both McDowell and Freedom gave tonight. The level of play in that game to me shows that our conference is the best girls conference in the state. That type of effort by either squad would have beaten both Independence and Harding easily. Unforunately there's only one team from the NW4A making it to Winston-Salem...I think McDowell is going to represent our conference well next week.

As far as the game itself goes...that is going to be one that the Freedom folks are going to the re-hashing over for a long time. They had a 15 point lead on McDowell and make the Lady Titans look absolutely terrible, the only problem was that Freedom did not put McDowell away in the final four minutes of the half. Kinda ironic isn't it?

McDowell came storming back and took a Freedom 15 point lead and trimmed it down to 2 points at the half. Freedom came out in the 2nd half and scored two quick baskets and increase the lead back to 7 points but McDowell did not go away. In the final 11 minutes of play, Freedom pretty much self-destructed. They loss all composure getting two reall silly technicals which allowed McDowell to take and increase the lead. Smart judgement by the McDowell guards kept the Lady Titans in control in the final four minutes of play.

As one of the Watuaga folks said on here a couple days ago, Lady Titan guard Jessica Smith is the un-sung hero of McDowell. Jess once again came up huge scoring nine points but most importantly playing excellent defense chasing Ali Ford and having to go through all those screens that Freedom set. Jessica's game has been so solid this year but ever since the AC Reynolds game at the end of the regular season her game and her intensity has went to another level. Kurie is Kurie...and that is one of the toughest girls I have ever seen play at McDowell High. Bethany Dages is another player that dosen't get the proper props, she played another solid game and her performance has went up in the last few weeks. Kelsea Greene, especially in the 2nd half showed some fire that I have never seen in her. her shot didn't fall as much tonight, but her intensity was not to be questioned at all.

I am extremely happy to see the Lady Titans make it to Winston-Salem, just remember the job is only half done. Let go down there and take the regional crown and show who is the best team in this state.

    Congrats to McDowell
but if you didn't see the game, Dan's post doesnt tell a couple key issues. It was basically a 5 pt game at the end, but those 2 technicals that FHS were assesed were BOTH instigated by Washington. The first , she was fouled going to the basket and turned and pointed in the face of the girl who fouled her...a freedom girl steps in and SHE is given the tech, the second WAshinton again says some thing to a player and the girl goes at her and gets the tech..should have been double techs or none at all...that represented 8 pts for MCDowell.
Mcdowell shot 41 frree throws , FHS 14 how could you asses this game and not see that as the determining factor.
Kurie was whistle for 1 foul late in the game...that was all. FHS Had 3 starters out midway thru 4th. So officiating was HUGE in this game.
Fhs should have protected that big lead before halftime being up only 2 was ridiculous considering how much better they played the first half than MCD.
JUST WOULD HAVE LIKEd TO SEE THE GAME COME TO A 1 or 2 POSESSION GAME WHICH IT WOULD HAVE WITHOUT THE TECHS.

But officials usully get the one who retaliates and it got us twice tonight.
Good season for a young patriot team, They sure didn't roll over or go down without a fight.
Ford was Ford- found open person- shot is good enough-25 pts
Washington 30- 16 of those were free throws

From this point all you can do is say go get em McDowell....you represent us all now.

    :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

You've been good at being a crybaby all year dribbles...the first technical I'll take your word for it, something may have been said. The second technical was a no-brainer when one of the Freedom players (in disgust) takes the ball in front of the official and throws it towards the bleachers. That type of attitude is asking for it. I'm sure your four minute collapse at the end of the first half was our fault as well.

I'm sorry that Kurie can't please you with her style of play...but she does what she does best within the team's philosophy. She's not gonna shoot the ball from 30 feet out just for the hell of it. Ali scored 25 and forced up enough attempts in the 2nd half for the first two games of next season. Just like the guy in the Alltel commercial, if she forces it up at the next level like she did during the 2nd half tonight, she's gonna get it back in her face.

Dribbles, I'm sorry but Freedom deserved both of the techs they received. As I said earlier they are an undisciplined team and it showed tonight. They have a ton of quality players but the leadership is lacking. Attitude reflects leadership. Remember that. Dribbles = Excuses

Dribbles, I agree 1000% with Dan. Im sorry that Washington's playstyle isnt what your use to seeing Ford throw up. If ali would have hit most of her 3's yall prob. would have beaten us very easily. Get use to another year of disapointment because from what ive read from you on the boards this year, your in for a lot of crying when McDowell plays yall next year. Dont blame officials for blowing 15 point leads. That just shows freedom let up and McDowell took advantage and Washington once again showed em another lesson with her great skills.

OK, time for a neutral fan to step in. I drove up from Charlotte to see a ball game....not the first one. I got one.
I stood on the baseline with the 3 refs from the first game and listened to their comments. Amazing...what do refs who arent working do.....stand around and comment on plays, players, and yes refs.

    1. You arent going to shoot many FTs when you are launching 3 dozen outside shots.
    2. McDowell is very good at establishing rebounding position. How many of Freedom's fouls were rebounding fouls.....
    3. People that drive draw fouls. Ali had her share. KW goes hard to the basket so often....she lives at the foul line.
    4. Ford was off. Period. You aren;t going to win big games when she takes that many shots and doesnt hit 50%. I would guess that she was what, 30%She had a number of open looks, but just couldnt connect. Had she hit just 2 of those shots, .....probable different ending.
    5. the first T....Sure , KW said something, but it wasnt profane or the ref would have "T" ed her. Freedom girl reached out and "shoved". This is an automatic T. You dont retaliate with a shove.
    6. the 2nd T was a frustration call...again, you just dont do that.
    7. There was one horrible call....the continuation basket given Washington late in the game.....
    8. To those who complain that all KW is all cherry picking. I did not see her once do that .....She usually started deep in the backcourt, and then just outran people downcourt. What she is especially good at, is rebounding. She is quick off the floor and constantly gets a hand on balls in traffic against taller kids.

    9. For Freedom to compete next year with McDowell, it will take someone who can keep KW off the boards, and a 2nd outside shooter to compliment Ford.
    10. I know its tough for you folks to look thru the emotion of that game, but it really was a great game. I marvel at the intensity and the crowd. Look at the first game....Those were 2 of the 3 best teams in Charlotte.....and they darn near put you to sleep. I am so fed up with going to a game and having a ho hum crowd of 300 watching. Tonight was what high school ball should be. Even the first game refs were impressed by the crowd and the spirit.
And one last point.....remember the games were switched.....Had the games remained as originally scheduled you would have had the refs that Harding - Independence had................
