    A bit more background

At my son's school they sign up for all their classes prior to the beginning of the year. My son, who is a senior and has filled all his PE requirements, signed up for advanced conditioning and advanced PE, two seperate classes. Conditioning for building muscle, PE for fun. Of course he got the opposite of what he planned for. Adv. PE in the fall and adv. cond. in the spring. He immediately tried to get it switched at the beginning of the fall semester and was told no way. The injury he had in the fall was from flag football. The guys who have been hurt this spring were playing basketball and some kind of dodge ball, all time killers in the PE classes. My son's baseball coach finally talked to the adv. cond. instructor to get him out of heavy lifting on gamedays. On his progress report he got an "F" for a max he was supposed to improve on the bench. His other grades in the class are good so he is at a "C" average overall. His mother and I just laughed. As the saying goes "you can't fix stupid".

Gman13 I fill your pain. Your right you just can't fix stupid. I'm wondering how that PE coach explains to that particular player's future college coach about his decline in that class? Does he tell him the truth? Well chances are he never has the chance, because college coaches have already figured this thing out. That's why they depend so much on the showcase coach. ( Man thank goodness for those guy's ) Impact, South Charlotte, On Deck, Hurricanes, just to name a few. It's my experience that if not for these guy's the baseball prospect is dead in the water. I'm sure this is not true of all, but is far more common than people think. ( Thanks to the high school progams that have the players best interest at heart. wish there were more of you), but until we will just have to deal with it. I'm thinking that's the difference between the Florida, Texas, California, and Georgia player, they have their High School behind them also. Just food for thought

I'm not making light of this but, let me get this straight....now the player may not be able to play at the next level because he got a "C" in his weight lifting class?

There are always exceptions to the rule but I think if the player and baseball coach both had a conversation with the teacher a compromise could be worked out to avoid max lifting on game days or work out a program designed for baseball....just my :twocents:

it's only required in the 9th grade , correct ? If he is a 9th or 10th grader a showcase isnt much to worry about missing anyway.. wait till next year...
and besides if he has any talent the scouts will find him..

plan ahead better for the next school year..

    More common than you think

    Gmansdad,

I understand completely your situation. For those who make light of the situation, keep this in mind:

    1. Unless you sign up for 2 pe's you are not guaranteed which semester you will have pe in most high schools.

    2. Baseball players who strive to make high marks generally want to take a full load of academics in the fall, leaving the spring open for those late night ball games.

    3. In some schools (my son's) a battle is waging between the football coaches and the baseball guys who no longer play football and go to showcase teams in the fall. If the AD is not the baseball coach, the kid will lose the battle every time.

I feel your pain gmansdad, my son had always been urged to take pe every semester, but finally could not deal with the football coaches lack of concern about how a baseball player should condition (his showcase coaches gave him advise) He dropped PE in his "championship" spring and got paid to be an academic tutor instead. It sounds like you're doing a great job looking out for your sons best interest. Keep up the good work!

    bball1,

I understand and agree with what's being said....maybe I'm just spoiled from the relationship my sons HS Baseball Coach had with the PE / Weight Training teachers to make sure everything worked out....I didn't realize there is so much lack of cooperation in some of the other schools.

Outside of stretching and light weights, I think the biggest thing my son had to lift during weight training was picking up the rocks on the baseball field. He must have done a good job because he received an "A" for that course

Yeah, but he left those for the underclassmen.

Seriously, I feel for G-Man's kid. I have heard that weightlifting theory from a football coach before. Some of them look at baseball players as pansies and could careless their complaints about feeling pain in shoulders or knees.

We were fortunate. At SM, they had special weight training drills for football, basketball and baseball...of course, it didn't hurt having the baseball coach in charge of all PE coaches.
