Why I wouldn't be an umpire..#1

Glad to know that the runner could have put the catcher in the other fence, but didnt. Thats nice of him.
It was clearly intentional-no dont about it, your coach was just happy they didnt eject the kid, he didnt even argue that the umpire changed the call. Is it not a rule you sit the next game if ejected from a ballgame. And the last time I checked the catcher had the right to block the plate, But the runner has to slide..period. Its plain and simple if he called him out for taking out the catcher then he should have been ejected.

 

Another Real Life Scenario from last week

Bases loaded, 1 Out
Batter hits a long fly ball to center field for 2nd out
Runners at second and third tag up
Runner at third scores
Runner at second advances to third
Appeal that the runner on second left early. Umpire calls him out, resulting in 3rd out.
Big discussion as to if the run from third should be allowed

Sorry, I phrased that wrong - I was trying to say that if it had been intentional, it would have been a nastier collision. He did go in too hard, but it was an error in judgement, not an intentional "I'm gonna take this kid out come he... or highwater"....

Right or wrong, he wasn't ejected....

and i'd would venture to say he wont be doing it again in high school....

(now, had it been next year, he'da been safe and the score wouldve counted......or so ive been told)

A good umpire

Consistent with balls and strikes....in his zone.

Authority in his calls.....Even if you miss it and know it....act like you just made the best call in the world

Professionalism.....even though it is hs baseball look and act like the person in charge......

Do your job.....Be prepared to make calls in the correct position on the field, don't call someone out at 2b from behind the plate.

Umpiring is a tough job and I admire those that do it and those that take pride in doing it well.

It is not a force play at first base in that situation, it is an appeal play. A force play is when a runner is forced to the next base. I'm sorry, you're incorrect on this call.

1) In high school, its called a delayed dead ball - the umpire calls interference, waits until action is complete, then if all runners including the batter runner have advanced at least one base safely, the intereference is ignored.

2) The only way there is ever a choice (by the way, there is not a choice in a balk play at any level) is when there is catcher's interference with less than 2 outs and someone is put out without advancing at least one base. The offensive coach may accept the result of the play instead of having the interference enforced. An example of this would be bottom of the 7th, 1 out, R3, score tied or down by 1 run, deep fly ball to CF with catchers interference, R3 tags and scores.
