    I agree completely with that.

The catcher was a sophomore in only his second game on varsity. While he's good, he was still only a sophomore and got crossed up.

I understand umps don't like getting hit and I wouldn't either, I just thought the way he handled it was completely unprofessional.

Shoot...if it was u-r-out, he would have tossed the catcher and glared at the pitcher...just kidding SuperJohn

    After a u-r-out *glare*...he wouldn't have any more problems.

With all of the talented umpires that we have on this site, we should have a sub forum or at least a thread devoted to "Ask the Umpire". I think it would be beneficial to a lot of people...particularly me :hump:

    Ask the Ump

that would be a very informative thread for most fans as well. there are a lot of important rules that most people don't know. I have been studying the case book and rule book for the last month and it is amazing some of the stuff that can happen in a game. Run umpires Run!!

    Umpire Management

Who decides the rotation for umpires calling a game? You would think the better ones would be assigned to the top games but I have seen some cases where this did not happen.
We all know that umpires are like every other profession in that some are very good while others are.........

Each area has a booking agent (approved by the NCHSAA) that is responsible for assigning games to umpires. Some of these areas are bigger than others so they have more umpires. The more umpires you have, the harder it is to determine which ones are your best. In our association, we are given our games for the entire season before the season starts - its hard to know who the best teams or what the top games will be all the time doing it this way.

Guy's don't let BigDipofCope get off the hook too easily. He and his regular partner do a great Job. But I really like to see him work with that other guy... I can't remember his name but he is really good looking. I think he wears #29.

    question for the umps

last night in the rjr- east rowan game, east rowan had a man caught in a rundown that ran a good 9-12 feet out of the baseline(just short of the outfield grass ). This man was caught ina rundown, due to running on a missed infield popfly(yes this should never have occured) with two outs. A run scored from third as the runner eluded the tag and was retired only after the man scored. The umpire fully acknowledged the man was out of the baseline, but said he had the area of the turn he took around the base, plus another four feet. Is this a correct interpretation?

No this is wrong the way you explained it. if the runner is trying to elude a tag he cannot go outside 3 feet of the basepath direct line that he is in between the bases. sounds like you had a rookie umpire?

This is one I'd have to see. I can't visualize this from your explaination. Having said that, there is no 4 foot rule. There is a 3 foot rule, when a runner tries to elude a tage, but as far as baseline is concerned, the runner makes his own baseline. After he rounds 1st and is 9 feet wide, he has made his baseline (9 feet wide of 1st) and if he eludes a tag, he's only got 3 feet wide of that. Bad interpretation, but he was probably right... again, not sure because I didn't see it.
