benched one heck of a good athletic for throwing her helmet and mumbling something under her breath that she refused to repeat to the umpire. . . . .probably a good thing she didnt say it twice - i read lips pretty well. ....cant deal with disrespect, it effects everyone as it goes on.

    Oh, Okay....

Now we agree on that one! But what/who is a good coach could be open for a lot of debate itself!

    back in the day

I remember a teammate from HS that was the type to just get by, maybe miss a practice now & then, always an excuse, practice habits were slack, & was not a starter, etc,.....then would get a chance in the game & smack a homer, or make a great fielding play. then at next practice it was back to his old self with undesirable habits.

I've seen it many times.......some kids are not good practice players but can perform like champs in a game.

If I HAD to choose it'd be the respectful hardworking kid obviously. But I don't mind taking a stab at coaching those prima donas in hopes of reverting their ways. Because bottom line, if they don't conform to the rules set forth for the team, they will be dismissed, and hopefully learned some kind of lesson that way.

I actually had that happen to a superstar Football and Basketball 7th grader one year, he was undefeated (coached wrestling) and I had to kick him off the team because he thought he was above the rules...and it was for something that I could have very easily turned my head on but...mmno. We more or less lost the championship because of it, but I have no regrets whatsoever, because that kid came back the next year and was a leader on the team, and he went on to win a gold medal, and seems to be a better person for it. So if I did take the superstar with an attitude, it wouldn't be for what he/she could do for the team, but hopefully what I could do for him/her.
