Billy Joe "Speed Limit" Frankin, a junior at Catfish Junction, throws a low-90s fastball to go with a mid-80s knuckleball. Can you imagine? His changeup clocks in at around 55, hence the cool nickname.

I also hear he's "country strong" when it comes to hitting.

There's a guy on NCPreps claiming a hitter at Elkin is hitting .700. The kid has signed to go to UNCP, and he's "hitting close to .700."

I know Speed Limit and he is amazin'. But the the real story on how he got his nickname is unique. The story goes that his FB actually slows down midway to the plate... then seems to pick up another gear and blasts through the zone. The guy is unbelievable considering he is only 5'2", but his arms reach his toes.:bike:

The "country strong" was referring to his habit of not bathing during the baseball and fishing season...some kind of superstitious thing:bike:

they are good high school pitchers and may do well at a college but they simply are not pro prospects. after over 100 years of professional baseball they have a good idea of what they need to have to suceed. the fastball has to be there and you can teach other pitches but you cannot teach a great arm.

If what I read is true, Maddux was hitting 92 in high school.

    Yep...as was Glavine

You really have to go back to Randy Jones with the Padres...he was devastating with his 78 FB

I was thinking about the PG WWBA tournament in Jupiter about 4 years ago. I believe there were 6-7 pitchers that were consistent 90's....now it's filled with 2 pages of players doing that.

South Carolina doesn't have one pitcher on their staff throwing under 90. They won't look at you if you don't. That's why so many pitchers throw for the guns. They just rear back and let it fly...not really caring where it goes; just hoping for a high number (knowing if they can consistently achieve that magic number, their opportunities increase with it.) In one sense it's understandable...on the other hand it's a shame.

I saw on Sportscenter last night that one guy was throwing side arm about 79 or so.
