OK, I'm kind of new to the official NCHSAA rules and regulations, so need some of your expert advice with regard to player participation and eligibility.

I believe that in NC, a player can only participate in a maximum of 4 games a week, Varsity and JV combined. If a player that played in the JV game, sits on the bench during the Varsity game, and then is put in as the courtesy runner for the pitcher, has she burned an additional game against her allotment of 4? I am thinking that as a courtesy runner, this player has not "officially" entered the game. I believe that the only way a player can officially enter a game, is to actually take an at bat, or play a position in the field.

I defer to the experts here on TBR to give me some insight to my inquiry, and if possible, explain the participation and eligibility regulations with NC High School Softball.

It does not count as a game if courtsey runner only if their name is not listed on the lineup card. If turned in on a lineup card it counts

Name on lineup card? Are you saying that if the girls name is listed in the starting lineup, or are you saying listed "anywhere" on the lineup, like listed as a Sub? Would like a clarification. Thanks.

Yes that is the way the rule is written. Lots have put jv girls on the varsity lineup just in case but if this is done for every game they are over the limit. I don't know if anyone inforces this but that is the rule. Have heard some umpires tell coaches to only list starters on their lineup cards to avoid this problem

    Leave names off lineup card?

Central-d, I understand where you are coming from, however, I know is travel ball, if a player is not listed on the official lineup, which includes a list of all available subs, then that player can not be entered into the game. I am correct on this? I know we've actually had this happen before in tournament ball.

    Line up Cards

We played a team this week that listed all varsity and jv on the varsity card. Their last names were listed with initial for first name. On the jv card most of the same players were listed on it with their first name listed and initial last name. They did change uniforms though. I'm a little slow, but it didn't take long to figure that one out. They used a couple of their varisty numbers on the line-up card for the jv by mistake. When I challenged for them batting out of order by their number, blue said number didn't matter, as long as the name was correct.

if a kid dresses for a game and are listed on the lineup card then they are participating in the game. i once thought it only counted as a game if they played. that is not the correct interpretation of the rule. if they're on that card it counts regardless of if they start, pinch hit, courtesy run, etc.

as the devils advocate however the only way to get caught on this, besides turning yourself in, would be if someone had all of your lineup cards, or if you had the same umpires for all those games.

and also, they can not play in four games unless the fourth game is on a nonschool day.

    hope that helps

What he said is exactally right. One thing I'll add is if you have someone you are only using as a courtesy runner they do not have to be listed at all in school ball. In travelball it don't matter how many games you play so list them all. You can even list a player who isn't there to start the game and if they come late they can enter the game

A fourth game can also be played as long as it is part of a double header.
