    Talent vs. Coaching

Interesting issue. I'm sure the fall of SM Baseball is a gut wrenching subject for you. I do have objectivity on my side. I don't have a dog in this fight.

    Talent vs. Coaching

Why is making the playoffs as the 5th team from the conference so important?

In the preceeding post you said that Bagwell couldn't have done any better with the SM team this season. We'll please allow me to (courteously) disagree.

If Bagwell wouldn't have made a difference then why on Earth is he making such a big difference with the AK team? They are only Soph's and Juniors and have a winning record!

    No offense HONKER58, but....
You said it in the statement above...(these proven players)....

Proven players shouldn't have to be told how to hit, pitch, run, give 100%, etc, etc....Some degree of teaching and coaching yes......but

I'll give it to you....Maybe the coach isn't motivating and giving the kids what they are accustomed to, but every coach is different and as a senior and a proven player you adjust and make the best of it...I know its easier said than done....I'm sorry I don't agree that its the coaches fault and that he could have some how, made a big difference...

I don't think, had Bagwell stayed, they would have been to much better than they are..Sorry, its just a opinion.......Let them play hard and and enjoy the rest of the season without all the drama...They can still play hard and make a difference, especially the seniors...[/QUOTE]

None taken, I just think that from watching these boys almost every game this year, that there are things I see that is causing them to be uncomfortable at the plate, on the mound, etc... As much as I dislike old Bags, he was a motivator, and yes at this level, more than any, you need to motivate. There are so many other things pulling them in different directions, parents, girls, friends.

These boys just refuse to take anything the coach says as knowing what he is talking about, now that is not his fault entirely, but from the first day he had tryouts with these guys, he had no respect. Most of them think of him as a ladies golf coach, and he proved it by the way he had tryouts, no knowledge of the game, and no direction for his coaching staff, it was a seat of the pants style from day one, and from what I see, still is, unfortunately.

I have confidence in these guys tonight to get it done.

This is Dbacks Jr... i remember as a senior at South Meck last year always seein Honker58 sayin somethin bad about the coaching at SM.. what happened to us last year had nothing to do with our coaching PERIOD! we were prepared mentally and physically every single day we stepped on that field. Being a former player at South Meck and having played with the great group of guys at that school, we all knew what was expected of us, whether we were a senior or a freshman. Regardless of who is coaching South Meck now, the seniors, juniors and sophomores that played under Bagwell all know how a top notch program is run. They know how to get after it in practice and in games. The seniors at that school are incredible guys and great players! They know what they want, and they know if they want the program that SM has had in the past, they cant blame it on anyone but themselves, they've gotta step up and get it done on their own. They know what it takes, they've seen it for 3 years. So you can talk about coaching all you want Honker, but instead of comin on here and complainin about guys not playin (which im sure one of them is your son) and the coach not doin his job, why dont you talk to the players? They've all got what it takes, so why don't you give em the push they need instead of bringing em down by talkin about how awful the program is there now? They've got a great program... always will! Thats all thanks to the hard work that the people put in years and years before! Success doesnt come easy...

Jr. Great to hear from you. I wish I could take back all the things I said about ol' bags. You could not have said it better, you were PREPARED. Yes, they did know how to get it done in the past, and still have the great ability. However, the coach there does lack a lot when it come to identifying what is wrong at the plate, etc... I wish I did have a son playing there, but mine played there when your parents were Gamecocks. I just have followed the program for many, many years, went to school there, and hate to see it go down hill. The boys stepped up last night, and I feel will from this point on, but it is those players that get it done, not the coach. I have talked to the boys, who are mostly seniors, and know what it was like there in the past, they had stated, "this guy is an idiot". Whether I am a fan of Bags or not, he was a great person in getting the most out of a player. I do not feel he ever developed anyone, just used them to fit where they could do the best job. That he did well.
Finally, do you think a player just forgets how to hit, catch, pitch and field, ones that have proven how well they do it year after year before this one. Maybe the only thing that they can be blamed for is not giving the new caoch a chance. But after what I have seen, these guys are smart, and know the coach is in over his head at SM.

    Good luck in your career.
