    Reynolds shocks South Caldwell

    [IMG]Posted by Andrew Pearson
Coming to you live from Davis Field which is teeming with Major League Baseball scouts tonight. And there was also a major upset.
Final score: Reynolds 5, South Caldwell 3
Reynolds jumped out to a surprising 4-0 lead after five innings thanks to RBIs by Chris Cummings and Matt Overbey. Sam Runion is consistently hitting 92-93 miles per hour with his fastball.
The Spartans answered with home runs by Brad Chavis and Madison Bumgarner in the top of the sixth inning.
Reynolds got fortunate and scored a run on a strikeout in the sixth inning. Kyle Paeplow struck out, but the Spartans catcher mishandled the ball allowing Andrew Jeffords to score.
Runion (5-2) struck out six Spartans.

    on a high note-literally

Bumgarner's HR was the longest & highest hit ball I've ever seen leaving Davis field. It got out quick, too. I've seen Hinson & Paeplow put them up at the greenhouse in right, but never seen one up and over the big pines in left. I'm thinking 500'+, easy.

This was a great game to watch! I was rather impressed with the speed of ACR's runners when they got on base. Several times when balls were hit by the Rockets in the infield it looked like SC's players were in a rush to throw runners out resulting in several errors. The shot by Bumgardner to LF was an absolute monster! I am guessing Runion's stock rose considerably with his pitching performance. Good luck to both teams as the playoffs approach.

Courage is FEAR, that said it's PRAYERS.
I'm guessing you never saw Andre Treadway clear the light pole in center field?

    Bumgarners HR

Here's the pitch he hit out. It was quite a shot.

Over the last three weeks , the bottom part of ACR's batting order has hit the ball very well with a number of key hits that have helped produce wins. It has made a big difference in the season as compared to the first of the year when the team was not hitting the ball.

I was reading the local Lenoir News Topic today about the game last night. South's 6,7,8,9, and Leadoff guy went a combined 0 for 15. We had basically the same situation happen when we lost to East Rutherford 2-1.

We must find a way to start getting the leadoff guy on base much more in order to take advantage of Madison batting directly behind him. We also need to play small ball more effectively. Every guy in South's lineup is capable of knocking the ball out of the park but we need to find a way to score a run or 2 early to take the pressure off our team.

Also as was pointed out already, ACR's end of lineup seemed to do most of the damage. What happens is often guys at the end of the lineup see alot of fast balls since pitchers think they can just over power these guys. Regardless it is still not easy to hit a 90+ MPH fastball so credit ACR.

It will be interesting to see how the Conference Tourney goes next week. If South meets ACR again will South throw Madison again? Madison has pitched so many times against these guys that we should probably throw Messer against them. It is pretty amazing that Madison has pitched as well as he has considering how many times they have faced him.
