Tonight I saw a pretty good game Central Davidson vs. East Davidson. For the conference tourny championship. CD 2 ED 0. Leonard once agan pitched a no hit gem. Question: in the 1st inning with a runner on 2nd and third with one out. Fly ball hit to deep center was caught. Baserunners tagged up and advanced. On appeal the runner at 2nd was ruled that she had left early and was called out. Should the run have counted? Why? I was just a spectator as my DD team was put out last night. Any insight would help.

I would think the run counts because it scored prior to the third out. The third out was not an out until the appeal was made.

    I could be wrong.

    No.....

I don't think so since it is contingent on both being successful on the same play. If it was a case of a runner trying to stretch something out after reaching the next bag successfully (say it was deep enough or the OF fell after making the catch and the runner from second tried to tag and take 2 bases) then I think the run would have counted in front of her.

I could be dead wrong also....confusing play for sure.

saw the exact same thing in Mid State semi's. Tie ball game in 7th, bases loaded, one out. Deep fly to center. Runner on third tags and "scores". Runner on second did not tag. They throw her out for third out. Run did not count. Coach says its like a force out at first, even if run crosses before the out at first, it does not count. Cost Orange the ball game.

The run does count. There is no force since the defense has to appeal. If they fail to appeal properly there is no out so there can be no force.

If there was no appeal involved, this may be a different situation.

    Rule

Not sure how rule reads but to me, this was all one play a continution so if runner was out at second then it was a double play and the run would not count.

    FM is right

Consulted the best ump I know, does HS and other stuff.:book:

The run does count. The runners went on their own, no force involved. As long as nobody called "time out", they can appeal while the ball is live.

He said many coaches make that mistake, in the heat of battle they will call "time" and once you do, that play is in the book and cannot be reviewed.

Good job FM....you hit it right on the head...

    I was wrong....AGAIN.....:ack2:

I would have to read the book, but that run cannot count when you've got a double play for the 3rd out, and you don't have to tag the runner. Otherwise, that could be used as a trick play.

    Run Counts

The run does count, no force on appeal it becomes a timing play and therefore the runner crosses the plate before the appeal the run counts. If the defense would've thrown to second before the run crossed the plate, then no run...
