    Can't speak for all coaches/regions...

But 27 is exactly right in my case which included 4 years with Region 5 and One year as West leader.

    Agreed.

However Coach 27 is correct. The best players usually get picked, tryout or no tryout. How they get picked may vary. Your performance during the season matters, as it should. As does the support of your coach.

Players must attend a tryout to be selected. Even if a player is well known and the coaching staff wants to select him, he must attend one of the tryouts.

I didn't mean to imply you didn't have to go. I can see where my comment could be taken that way. I read that everyone has to attend. I was just saying your performance throughout the year gets consideration, as it should.

For the past two seasons I have had the pleasure of watching the region 7 tryouts and the western senior tryouts. There are about four or five high school coaches representing each of these teams.

All these coaches have a very good idea of who is showing up because they have been coaching against them throughout the season/s. There are very few players these coaches don't know about and the ones they don't they keep a very close eye on them throughout the whole tryout to make sure they don't overlook a lesser known player.

The tryouts I watched were all "pro-style" work outs. The same type all major league scouts and college showcases use. Every player is awarded the same opps.

The problem that I have noticed ever since I was in high school in the early 90's is too many people are used to using the "politics" excuse. If you are top notch you will always make the team. If you are pretty good you've got a chance. and if you are just a decent high school player you probably won't make the team.

That's the reason there are so many scouts still at the state games. It's one of the last true "elite" showcases. Money can't buy you a spot and politics or biased coaches is certainly not the case.

I really do believe that it is the best system that one can come up with, but to think it does not have flaws is a mis-statement; and I'm not a disgruntled parent. I was fortunate to have a son play. But I'm going to give you an example that still bothers me to this date:

There was an extraordinarily talented HS player. He led his team in every offensive category; HR's, RBI's, BA. He also pitched; ending his season at 10-0. He went on to lead his team to the 4A State Championship where he again led his team in hits, HR's, BA and pitched his team to their only win against an extremely talented Rose HS team (that had 6 D1 players on it). The kid is a yessir, no sir young man, very coachable and was one of the leaders on the team. He attended both tryouts and to this date (he has since gone on to a D1 school where he continues to be the leading hitter and pitcher) has never received information that he did not make the team.

Now, can someone please explain to this young man what he needed to do to make the team (or at least the criteria to making the team.) Because 4 years later, he still doesn't know.
