Sounds as if you do have to be current coaches then. So how does a particular region have 2 on staff that are no longer HS coaches?

Each region is required to have tryouts, and players are required to attend to make the team. That's how it has been done any time I have been involved. Certainly prior knowledge of a kid helps determine some things but the try-outs are big. For example if I were a coach and we played a team 3 times and a player killed the ball against us but had a bad day at tryouts, but I knew he was worthy, I would be foolish not to take him. The State games committee tries to maintain geographical balance in teh coaches selection per region, but many coaches dont apply. That geographical balance would tend to balance out the "prior knowledge" factor.

I have had 2 runs through the region process and have been both a head and assistant on the EAST staff. You are totally wrong with regars to phantom tryouts. I do believe that those on this board that know me will vouch for my integrity, esp... Braves and Coach 27

It should be mandatory that every player who tries out be notified as to whether he has made the team, or not. That's just common courtesy....of which there is not enough of these days.

Two players from our school attended a tryout this year. One was a talented pitcher who ended up being selected. He hit, blocked some pitches and threw to a base for time. The 2nd kid was a pitcher. He threw 9 pitches, 3 fastballs, 3 curves, and 3 of a 3rd pitch. In his case, a change-up. Neither player ran for time. One player was selected and one was not. I have no idea whether they should have been selected or not. I have no idea who they were competiting against. So there are no sour grapes. I think they are both very talented.

I have come to trust the comments of Braves, Coach 27, coachevans26, among others. While I would expect a tryout to be much like a showcase as they have said, in this situation something different may have happened. Possibly because the two boys were not infielders or outfielders. I wasn't there and I don't know. Maybe one of you can address this.

I don't have a dog in this discussion and am definitely NOT bothered by this. My son is not old enough and not sure he will ever tryout. He'll need to improve to make it. Just sharing something factual in the conversation and trying to listen and learn something.

Seriously, I have never questioned the honesty and character of the coaches involved. The one's that I know are some of the best this state has to offer.

On a personal level, if your son has the opportunity to be coached by Steve Evans, it would be an honor and a priviledge. If character, integrity and knowledge is important to you, then you could not have a finer coach.

I can not say this enough how fortunate we are to have both Coach Evans and May frequent our board and lend us their advice. Where else can you go in NC and seek advice from two highly regarded HS coaches. In my opinion, they are a major reason that TBR is one of the best.

On most sites, coaches get tired of the bickering, slamming, attacking and disrespectful tone by posters and refuse to enter in those discussions...and usually just avoid the site.

We are blessed with active participation with HS and college coaches. Minor and ex-MLB players, ML scouts and the many experiences by wizened parents that have gone through the HS and college experience.

As we are growing each year, it becomes more difficult to moderate each post and each thread. That is why I count on all of the members of the board to help. You know what we are about and what we are trying to do...and how we want to do that.

To break it down to simple terms:

    - Be respectful
    - Be informative, entertaining or both
    - Be supportive of all HS baseballplayers
    A. if you have a negative opinion of a particular player, keep it to yourself. We are not interested.

    That's pretty much it

Agree. Something to work toward for next year. If on your job no one ever told you how good or bad you were doing. You would think that what you do is OK.

    STATE GAMES

I know at the West tryouts, there were several "big" names that did not attend either tryout, while some kids drove several hours to be at both. It will be interesting to see if any of these no-shows wind up on the roster.

Based on coachevans26 post (1st one) and the entry instructions, it would appear that attendance is required in order to be selected. I wondered the same thing as JCCON - what if the "big names" don't show for the tryouts - could they still be on the team? If a player who didnt attend either tryout made the team, it wouldnt be right, regardless of who they are. If other players take their time to attend the tryouts in hopes of making the team - they should not be passed over in favor of someone who never attended. But if the entry instructions are correct, then those who did not attend should not be on the team(s).
