He had surgery on a nerve that had to be attatched in his elbow (I think). should be almost ready to start throwing again soon. Will he be playing for post 29 this year?

Not to belabor this throwing 90+ talk, but I have a question for those coaches out there that are familiar with radar guns and how they work. I've been out of coaching a few years now and didn't know much about guns even when I was in the thick of things, but how much difference is there in gun manufacturers and where the gun is positioned? I was the guy standing behind the scout for 2 innings Sat. night - I stated that I saw MB throwing from 88-91 in those 2 innings. The scout/coach whoever he was, was using a stalker and he was positioned up on the hill, beside the pressbox at South Caldwell, not flat directly behind the plate. Could that make a difference? The readings seemed pretty accurate to me, considering the fact that MB was on short rest and it just didn't look like 95 to my eye.

Just some questions for those "in the know" about guns. Thanks.

    It can make a difference

Because of my former line of work Im very familiar with radar (radio detection and ranging). The beam gets the most accurate reading when the beam is shot directly to the target and bounced directly back. So any angle can make a difference. The more angle - side to side and or up and down the more difference in the reading you can get. Usually it is minimal in these situations unless the angle is a whole lot. Plus obstructions can alter the reading to a degree as well. The stalker is the standard for ML scouts and most colleges as well. Bumgardner has established the fact that he can pitch and sustain low to mid 90 velocity. It could have been a combination of short rest and the angle of the gun giving a 2 to 3 mph difference in the reading.

Tonight at 5:30 and 10pm, there will be an interview with both Coach Parham and Madison Bumgarner from South Caldwell on WHKY-TV 14's The Unifour Tonight, the local newscast. Two part interview with both of them runs tonight and tomorrow.

That's about the best article I've seen on Bumgarner in a regular newspaper. It gives an excellent overview of his pitching and hitting abilites and his draft status. I was also glad to see confirmation from a credible source that Jimmy Messer is a top notch major league prospect in his own right. I thought that he should be, but I had never heard whether he was or not.
