Obviously many players that do the running slap are out of the batters box when the ball is struck. Is a violation ever called? or is this play just overlooked as a rule across the board?

Whoa! I started to post that it is never called, deleted the post, and sat down and saw the one of the slappers from Tennessee get called out for slapping out of the box. Funny thing is, on the replay, it looked OK to me. I saw one in the Arizona game that was 2 or 3 steps out and nothing was called.

    I saw it too

Yes, I saw the Tn player get called out for slapping out of the box. It looked as if one foot was clearly out of the box. I think it happens often but is rarely called.

Another situation, I saw an ump in one of the Ariz games call an automatic "ball" because the pitcher failed to deliver a pitch within 10 seconds. Didn't know of this rule.

Tried to get it called....never had any success with it. Judgement call is always the reply.

when we first started teaching slapping about 6 or 7 years ago, there were never any calls about being out of the box, i think that the umps were trying to figure out what the girls were doing. we had more problems with the slap being considered a bunt and being called out for foul ball bunt third strike thing!!(am i confusing you yet??) as time went on and more slappers and mroe experienced umps came about, the out of the box thing started being called. so we started teaching them to have their front foot in the air when they hit the ball. most umps will look for that and not call the out of the box thing. Laronda McClain was probably one of the most proficient slappers a couple of years ago, front foot up, slap the ball, on base and laughing at ya before you could get the throw off.

    Rule reads......

    Rule 11, section 2, paragraph e... page 131 2007 rule book

"At the moment of bat-ball contact, the batter may not contact the pitch when any part of the foot is touching home plate, even though she may be touching the lines of the batter's box. In addition, the batter may not contact the pitch when the entire foot is touching the ground completely outside the lines of the batter's box"

So... as long as your heel is on the line, your ok... right?
    Go heels !

    ???

Coach are you saying that if only one foot is completly out of the box it should be call an out, or does both feet have to be out of the box?

    One foot out, you're out.

I was a switch hitter and slapped all through my playing career until graduating college, and I teach it continually now with my kids consistently under a 2.9 home to first if they fit the profile. I was called out a few times for being out of the box, it happens. Usually I timed a pitch wrong, over aggressive, etc. Anyway, one foot needs to be out, not both feet. The player can have one foot in the box and the other in the air completely out of the box (but in the air) and still be legal. As the poster before said, a heel can be barley touching the line and the slapper would be OK as long as that other foot was in. Been a few miscues with slappers in the WCWS this weekend. AZ's Lowe was out once and the TN kid looked in, but what are you gonna do...judgement call by umpire and they do not have TIVO which is the only way I could tell which was the right or wrong calls. The kids are taught that the box is their runway and they need to get going. The "running" slap is as only as good as its first couple steps. Larry Ray at AZ is as good as they come teaching the slap; has some nice videos out for any young coaches or players wanting to learn/teach it effectively. Hope that clarifies the rule.
