eyesup explained it very well.... we teach our slappers to use the top of the box as the contact zone while landing on her left foot. We do not use the drop step as we initiate our forward motion. We use an open stance and pivot to the top - center of the box. This helps curb our aggressiveness and keeps the bat in the hitting zone. Slappers are taught to land their left foot on the chalk

Based on the verbage in the rule book...

Ole Guru...the man of the hour. the man with the power, the man too sweet to be sour....I respectively agree to disagree....

Verbage clearly states " entire foot" which I take as either foot, but not both feet.

    Rule 11, section 2, paragraph e... page 131 2007 rule book

"At the moment of bat-ball contact, the batter may not contact the pitch when any part of the foot is touching home plate, even though she may be touching the lines of the batter's box. In addition, the batter may not contact the pitch when the entire foot is touching the ground completely outside the lines of the batter's box."

Ialso watched the game and heard the announcer say that if your foot breaks the plane your are out of the box. I have watched every game so far, and the one that gets me is the 5 second rule to put your hands together when you toe the rubber. It seems the ump's had class b4 this wcws.

On the subject of slapping, do "slappers" just do this technique at any time regardless of situation? Are there situations in games that you as a coach would not want your player slapping?
That's something I notice about softball vs. baseball..........seems that softball players / coaches do things many times without regard to the "situation". Example: I see some 3rd basemen always playing "in" regardless of game status, even when situation would not call for bunting.

Only 1 foot has to be out of the box in order to make the call.

A one-dimensional offense in football is very easy to defend. This is the same with a slapper that can only slap and run…Look at the top leadoff hitters in the game.
(Watley, Lowe, etc ) They can hit for power, soft slap, hard slap, bunt, and have great bat control, which gives them the ability to hit backside, behind a runner, or what ever is needed to put pressure on the defense.

    Here is a scenario...
bottom of the 7th, your down by one, you have bases loaded. Your # 7 hitter is on 3rd base, she does not run very well. Your leadoff hitter is up but can only soft slap and run... Defense is gonna smother the play and bring it to the force play at the plate. If you don't have a pinch hitter, your hoping for a walk or you lose...
We need to teach our speed kids how to also hit with power...

As far as the question as to why softball players don't change defensive schemes based on the situation....that's a coaching issue...

    As If....

As if a pitcher doesn't have enough to keep up with, now they have to count too! Talk about RARE, I have seen more pitchers, called on, not having their feet in contact with rubber, than I ever have! I didn't even know umps knew that was a rule! Talk about RARE!!!
Yeah, that is fair! I have seen the "slapping out of the bax" called a couple of times, but you are correct, it is rare!

    also

Also I noticed defensing the slap in the WCWS. One team (don't remember) positioned their 2nd baseman way in beside the pitcher circle...yes, that far in beside the pitcher! & 3rd baseman playing in and 1st base playing only a foot or two in front of bag, SS at regular spot.

ever see this set up in HS or TB?
