Noticing in WCWS that several teams basically go with just their ONE ace pitcher.
Putting arm well-being / injury potential aside for this thread (That's been debated lots)...........Just thinking about these are MAJOR traditional softball powers as far as D1 is concerned. Surely they can recruit at least one other pitcher that they would "trust" in a regional playoff game.

    I Agree...

You would think that they could come up with at least one more!
Hey but did you hear, repeatedly, Arizona say "that they had no other option, than Taryne", I'm sure that other pitcher just loved having that said about her, on national tv coverage! Wonder how she feels about paying Arizona for her education now? Wonder if she had no other option?

    yes

yes, I heard the same thing. & Arizona is a great example of my previous point...........probably the most heralded D1 softball program; can't they come up with a second pitcher?

    Who knows...

Who knows, maybe big D1 programs are too polital also! You would think that Mike Candrea would know that you should probably have a back up, if only in case of injury! Of course he did have another pitcher "she was "no other option"! I know there are other pitchers on TN roster, but did any of them see any mound time, tv coverage, NOPE! Okay I agree Monica, is the best of the best, but the other pitchers, are probably pretty dang good in their own rights. They are going to and playing for ,the same D1 school/program. FGS spread the love!

Arizona's second pitcher is academically ineligible. LSU had a good season using 2 pitchers, so did Texas A&M. Tennessee has a Junior pitcher that would start for most D1 teams. Its hard to find 2 D1 pitchers who want to split mound time.

so recruiting 2 aces for same team in D1 is a tough deal? we get to the nitty-gritty.......it's about PT. I thought it was all about TEAM, not I.

I'm starting to wonder in our current culture if a true team concept is possible.

    Yeah Right I know...

There is no I in team, however there is a ME! You would think that those ego's would be shelved by the time you get to college, maybe not! But in reality you do have to look out for yourself because ain't nobody else gonna look out for you!

    Another Issue---

Think about it locally, isn't the same thing going on in our high schools???...Why do only pitchers get to be Players Of The Year majority of the time???....Doesn't a good defense help the pitcher with her WONDERFUL STATS ???? What if a catcher kept missing the rise ball coming at 60 mph,HMMMMMMM the pitcher would appear that she is wild??..or what if the catcher didn't block the drop ball???....again it would look as though the pitcher was wild....really the pitcher should be separate from the other 8 players as a defensive Player Of The Year scenario...I don't care who it is you should have a 2nd or 3rd pitcher due to possible injuries...it just doesn't make sense, if you're REC BALL OR TOP D1, YOU SHOULD HAVE ANOTHER PITCHER THAN JUST ONE...GURU

It will always be the pitcher

Their should be players of the year or pitchers of the year. If pitchers are always selected, don't call it player of the year. It could be the defensive player of the year and offensive player of the year. A lot of the time though, the pitcher tends to be the most important factor of the success of the team. But, a lot can be said about players that bat over .500, play a key defensive position, .700 OB%, steal 30-40 bases and score a lot of the team's runs. If you can hold a team down to 1 or 2 runs a game, you still have to have someone consistently getting on base and scoring to win games.
