Congratulations are in order for the WCU Baseball Team. I watched them for the first time ever at the Chapel Hill Regional, and came away very impressed. Not sure I have seen a team as disciplined at the plate. They do not get cheated. Very capable hitting up-the-middle, and back side. The coaches did a nice job of putting the pitching together to give them a great opportunity to win.

I was talking to one of the player's Dads...& he said that Saturday was the first time in 35 years that WCU has beaten ECU. I don't know if that is accurate, but it says alot about how good the Catamounts were this season. We're friends with Corey Martin, which gave us a rooting interest.

WS Journal said on Sunday 30 years, but they have had a solid program for 20 years. I also don't believe they are fully funded with max number of scholarships. I know several years ago, the head coach was charged with raising a signaficant amout of money for the program.

    I was

very impressed with WCU as well. They are extremely well coached. And they have some hitters in that line up. They had a great opportunity to win that game but just came up a little short. They are a very good baseball team. I also had the chance to see them a few years back in a regional at Fleming Stadium in Wilson. Each time I have seem them play I have come away impressed with the way they play.

    Agreed

I just happened to be following the game on the internet Gametracker yesterday. I clicked on all the the WCU players to see stats. etc. and was extremely impressed. Lots and lots of gawdy stats with .300+ averages and double-digit homeruns. Must have been a powerful offensive club this year. In fact, watching the game progress, would say Carolina was lucky to win that one. But you know what they say...good teams find a way to win the close ones.

Hat's off to WCU for a fine season.

One of the best players I've ever played with (Bryan Bowles...may have spelt the last name wrong) would've been a senior at WCU this year. It sucks he didn't stick with it.

should they have intentionally walked the all-american / veteran clutch hitter Horton in the 9th with 1st base open, 1 out, with a 1 run lead?

I dont know.....wasn't Chad Flack hitting behind Horton???? Flack has been hot recently too, so I guess you just choose your poison on that one?

    What they should have done

is hit the cut off man and held the winning run at first instead of trying to throw out the runner at third and allowing the go ahead run to reach second base. If they had done that they would have been tied when Flack got up with 2 outs instead of down by 1. They were the home team in the game and the worse that would have happened is they would have been tied 5-5 hitting in the bottom of the inning. That throw to third was not going to be close and the throw allowed the runner to go to second base. As far as throwing to Horton in that situation , Horton had not had a good ab all day. The ball he hit was a squibber off the end of the bat that just fell in. They had lefty on left so I like the move it just didnt pay off. WCU was in a great posistion to win it and definitely should have gone into the bottom of the ninth tied. Missing a cut off man does not show up in the box score but it was the reason this game did not go extra innings.
