Batter bunts ball, bat ends up in fair territory after batter drops bat, ball rolls up to bat and stops forward movement after striking bat....LIVE OR DEAD BALL ????

I have seen this happens several times and it has always been ruled a live ball.

    ??????

don't know the rule, but why should batter be penalized for dropping their bat and the bat just happens to come in contact w/ ball ?

    Obstruction ????

But it that is true then a batter could throw the bat every time and obstruct the defensive player from getting the ball...maybe it is a judgement call by the umpire....it happened to us in travel ball one time and it was called a "DEAD" ball.....Guru

    Part of the playing field

Once the bat leaves the batter's hands and is on the ground, it is part of the playing surface, and in the given situation the ball would be live. Now if the bat was thrown in an attempt to contact the ball a second time then that is different and is a judgement call...

Last year the rule was clarified. If the ball hits the bat (ie the bat is not moving at the time of contact) its a live ball. If the bat hits the ball (ie the bat is moving) its a dead ball. Its a judgement call. If its intentional, the batter could be ejected.

Precisely, if it's not intentional, it's a live ball. Cost us a game last year.
