My daughter is a rising sophmore and plays three sports- High School Volleyball,Basketball and Softball. Plays on 14U travel softball team.Should she concentrate on 1 sport or stay with all. She is very talented in all three. Played and lettered as a freshman in Volleyball, One of the highest scorers on the JV basketball team last year and was MVP on the JV softball team and also plyed on the varsity softball team as the starting SS and batted .390. Any advise on this and advise for getting her out there for scholarships? Thanks

    As long as...

As long as her academics don't suffer, then I say great for her! She stays in shape year round and gives herself even more opportunities to get a scholarship to college ( or three seperate scholarships) great for you!

i have two players on the varsity softball team that play volleyball, basketball, cheer, and run track at the same time they play softball (softball is first of course). their parents have the same deal, keep up your grades, play all you want.

however, flip side of this is what sport does she really excell in, and what sport will offer her the better chance of a scholarship??? some girls will go to college and play two sports. sometimes its better to concentrate on what you're better at and what you want to do during college.

    College

If this yuoung lady truly wants to play major college ball, she probably needs to pick her favorite and or best sport and work on it year round. She can play volleyball and softball at some D-111 and D-11 schools but in my humble opinion will not be the best she can be at either sport.
That said it is an individuals decision and if they can't decide one, go for it if U have the guts and the will power.
Hope U had a great July 4th posters, members, and readers!

It all depends on your daughter's skills and interest. My daughter played three sports very well thru Jr High. Gave up basketball when she started HS. She is a pitcher and trained year 'round. Stuck with volleyball (first-team all-conference on a 20-win 4A team as a soph) until the that coach told her she had to do summer program. Of course it conflict with softball so that was the end of the volleyball career. Softball was clearly her sport all along so the decision was not that tough although she enjoyed the team aspects of Vball (not the pressure of being in the circle). In the end it all paid off though . . . full ride in a D1 school. If your daughter aspires to play at a D1 school she'll almost certainly need to start to specialize. If DII of III is her goal then there's really no reason to specialize if her HS coaches cooperate.

Totally agree. Generally speaking, picking one sport will make it much easier for her to be as good as she can be in her favorite. It will also make that sport better for her school, especially if you're talking about team sports.

Individual type sports such as cross country, tennis, or swimming will probably not impact softball performance...may even help, especially if its a fall sport. These type sports don't take as much time and leave some time for some softball skills workouts. Its really good if winter can be mostly time off except for maintaining conditioning and hitting the books.

There is probably higher pressure for the better athletes to play multiple sports in the smaller high schools.

I would say never pick just one sport until at least after completion of there soph. year. and even then, if they are good enough athletic, play two....

    Thanks for the responses

My daughters grades are not suffering from the 3 sports. She actually takes all honors classes and had all A's both semesters. We have discussed dropping a sport but she enjoys all so much and I guess we will stay with all for now and see what the future brings and get advise from her coaches. Thanks for the advise and I will continue to enjoy this site.

as everybody else has stated, if academics is not suffering then there's no problem with playing as much sports as possible. One thing I have noticed about some kids is that they play some sports that end up serving as an off-season training for another sport. For example I see a lot of the girls in this area who play basketball benefit from the fact that they run track during the spring or cross country in the fall.
