that it was created because of this incident. Bob Costas had this as a segment on this month's show and I found it incredible.

as a post script, it appears that Dixie Youth League is getting ready to change their name.

It is strange how things start and end up. It was new info to me also. The old always goes away. It was a bad time in our history. Right or wrong, those times have made us a better nation. That is where "AMERICA'S PAST TIME" comes in.

    Thanks for the history lesson

    Braves,

I appreciate the historical background on Dixie Youth Baseball. As a once participant in the league I did not know the origin or the reason for the conception of the league. Any news on if/what the new name might be. Thanks

It was only abou fifteen years ago that DYB replaced the Stars in their "Stars and Bars" with baseballs. Some things die hard but they eventually have to change for the betterment of all.

"Carey Wrenn, one of four state directors for North Carolina, said he intends to propose a new name at Dixie Youth’s annual board meeting in August.

Wrenn lives in Rocky Mount, Va., near Ferrum College. Ferrum is a member of the USA South Athletic Conference, known three years ago as the Dixie Conference.

“Some people may perceive the word ‘Dixie’ as being prejudice or racist,” Wrenn said. “I think it was a geographic name. But I think it’s time to move that.

“I always tell people, ‘Please judge us by our character, not our name.’ We welcome anybody and everybody. We just want kids to have a good time playing baseball.”

We (5 of us) started a league in our town and sanctioned Dixie Youth. We tried Little League and Babe Ruth and were told our numbers were not good enough to get a franchise, but Dixie Youth opened their arms to us, and worked with us. 5 years later we have enough #'s to sanction any league, but will remain loyal to Dixie Youth. I hate the past and am glad they're going to change the name, but a fine organization all the way to the national. I have actually met a founding member at the state meetings, and he is a very nice man.

It is strange why it was started. But in those times it was the right thing for those people. Today those people are gone and as with anything change comes. I think that if the league would not have changed it would not even be. If we look at all of them. They would have things that we would not like. For me LL needs to move the mound, bases, and the fence. At 12 they need to be learning the art of the game. But that is another thing. We can only hope that whatever any community chooses they do so for the kids and the game.
