I have often thought and wondered just how much pitching is to much for a young pitcher.
This weekend in the 90 plus heat we had a young lady that pitched back to back games, won the first game 1 to 0 and lost the second game in extra innings 2 to 0
Sat. after pitching in a eight inning win when I gave her a hug, the uniform was soaked, and Sun. was as hot, if not hotter.

Well this got me wondering if maybe we were not pitching her too much, so I called a Div 1 coach that I know, and ask her. She stated that as long as her form coming off the plated and she was not leaning and maintained good pictching form, she would be fine, with no damage to arm or shoulder.

So was just wonder what other thoughts are on this subject....

wow, this is a tough subject. many pro's and cons. the most that my dd has ever pitched in one day was 21 innings spread out over six games (losers brackets are hell) and she was 16yrs old. she had nothing left the next day, so we knew we pushed her too much and she was in top shape. i think that you really need to look at the individual, but back to back games in this heat really takes one heck of an athletic pitcher. how old was this pitcher???

Stay out of the losers bracket and...

...if you get there anyway, I hope your team has a warrior like M Peeler.

Cheeze, this is the young lady that I made reference to back during HS softball that would be a incoming freshman this year, she is now 13 and has another year in the 14 and under.
She is about 5'9" and weighs in at about 150, there is no doubt that she will be the starting pitcher for the South Caldwell team this year, while I do not expect her to go undefeated by any means, she will be above the 500 mark.
The college coach with whom I spoke is Windy Thees the head coach at the University of Memphis..

sounds like she has some muscle at 150#, but i think its an aweful lot to ask a 13/14 yr old to throw back to back with extra innings, especially as hot as its been. back in the day (four or five years ago), we had a three or four pitcher rotation. starting pitcher threw 3-4 innings, and rotations started. kept everyone fresh for tournament. closest thing we came to that was the finishing pitcher from last game started next game. but we still rotated after 3-4 innings. jmho, but i hope some of the other coaches will give their views also.

I think that age comes in to play here. When they get older too many factors come in to play. 12u DD threw 3 games in 1 day, wouldn't even think of it today. Can do 2, but in heat, wouldn't want her to do anymore than that.Don't burn her out.

In tournament play every inning and game slowly shifts the advantage to the offense. Batters see more and hone in while pitchers lose a bit from the tank with every pitch. Some can seemingly go forever, but it takes it's toll and the higher the level of competition, the quicker it shows up. The margin of error for pitchers gets very slim as the competition improves.

    one pitcher?

14u team and you only have one pitcher?

Awful lot of pressure to put on a 13 yr old girl...
Say what you want about the " pitch all day " mentality
that happens in travel ball, she still needs recovery time
and she better be perfect with her mechanics, or she
could be looking at arm issues by age 17...

I would never endorse that at that age.

Here's an idea for us coaches...

Have an actual plan on how to develop more pitching...
and one other thing.... score more runs...
Lot easier to run your #2 kid out with a 5 run lead...

    Just my thoughts....
