    Shouldn't they already know?

A good administrator should already know what kind of people he has working for him. What does it tell you about someone that is swayed by emails and only learns after a process is already started that he has a great guy already in place that can step in and do the job? Any Head Coach worth his salt is going to surround himself with the best guys he can. He understands that those guys are either going to be the reason he wins or loses his job. Too many guys spend years helping to build programs only to be passed over for guys that have not invested one thing into a program. This imo is a case of the administration having no clue that they had a guy already in place that had paid his dues , helped build a program , ready to take it to the next level. Note to administrators. If your program is on the right track and your head coach is stepping down. There is a reason it was on the right track in the first place. The HC had some great guys running the program. Look at them first. Know who they are. How about some loyalty to the guys already wearing your uniform? In this case the best choice was right in front of your eyes. I understand that is not always the case. But in this one the choice was obvious. Good luck coach in whatever you choose to do.

Your point is well taken Coach, but we all know an assistant rarely moves up to be the head guy......in any sport. Wingate, Tennessee, Western Carolina, and East Carolina are four schools that quickly come to mind who have hired new head baseball coaches within the past year or so, and none promoted the assistant. I don't know.... maybe administrators feel if they hire the assistant, they run the risk of being accused of not being thorough in the process and search to hire a replacement. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Good points by all, but at some point all of those HC's were assistants. Somebody gave them a chance to prove themselves.

Who is in the best posistion to lead the program?

When you have a coach leave for personal reasons its different than having a coach leave because he was not getting the job done. In the case of LR you have a guy already in place that knows the program , knows the players , knows the recruits and has a feel for the direction of the program. Its not like the program was in shambles and the HC was fired. Somehow people feel that a former HC is in a better posistion to come in and run a program. Every HC was an assistant at one time in their career and got an opportunity to eventually be a HC. To me there is no one out there in a better posistion to carry on this program than a guy that has had such a huge part in getting LR to where it is right now. Im beating a dead horse and the decision has been made. But I just wanted to get my point out about this. The new coach at Florida was a long time assistant at Clemson. Im not aware of coach Sully ever being a head coach. Coach Hendricks should have gotten the darn job. Now he has to continue to work his butt off and continue to help build the program under the direction of a new coach. Or move on to another job. Either way I wish him the best.

Not to argue, but Billy Godwin was an assistant at ECU at the time he was hired. He had just taken the assistant job the season he was promoted to HC.

Before someone posts a "give the new coach a chance", let me say, this thread is not about Paul Knight and his capabilities. I'm sure he will be a great coach and will accomplish alot with the talent he has. And I know he will get full support from all of the LR supporters.

Coach McGeachy has taken some arrows in this thread (some of it deservedly so). But he has to make his decision based on the information that he is provided. If the departing HC does not recommend his assistant for the position, it's a long, uphill battle to cast his assistant in a different light. The fact that the AD agreed to a "serious" vs "token" interview shows how bright that light became.

Coach Hendricks was given the opportunity to enlighten his AD of who John Hendricks is. The AD left the interview with an entirely different view. A view that overcame many objections and differences he had; to the degree that instead of ignoring him, he promoted him.

If you understood how far John's relationship and respect with his AD has come in such a short period of time, you would have a better idea how high that mountain was for Coach Hendricks to climb.

I know it's of no consolation to Henry, but for him to go from no support or respect for his opinions to being offered a promotion from his AD...says more about John's personality, character, integrity, persistance and provokes an often used cliche...."you can't judge a book by its cover"

Congratulations, Coach Hendricks. You've turned a weed into a rose...and in doing so, you have reminded alot of people that good things happen to good people. You have gained much respect for your efforts.

I know that this may not be a popular opinion, but I believe Coach McGeachy deserves some respect, also. He overcame a strong opinion, led by others, to the point of respecting your opinions and recognizing the talents that you bring to the table. There are many AD's at other institutions that wouldn't have bothered to take the time.

    JMHO....

I really truly believe it is primarily political, not taking away anything as far as who is and isn t qualified etc... In other words it is the old cliche of who knows who and lobbies for that particular person. I gaurantee this always comes into play as far as the movement and pooling and considerations of who gets what job where regardless of the profession It is sooo sad that loyalty does not go very far in the world and this has always been going on in the world I think! The key for those who get left out is steadfast PERSEVERANCE. In that if you want something bad enuf you have to be willing and ready to go thru walls to get it, and more times than not it is OUT there so to speak....sure it will take longer..and you might not get specifically what you want but something similar. I don t know Coach personally, may have met him somewhere along my baseball career...but as everyone I have heard here say he is a good quality person THEREFORE something very very good willl ultimately be in store for him!!! JMHO:4: :4: :4:

All the coaches here have told me there are no politics in baseball. Or the "P" word as some have called it. Personally. I know better but just nod my head and move on. It exists in all facets of life. What makes baseball any different?
