OK, Now that we have a little down time, I'll toss this out for TBR opinion. And yes it happened this way......batter hits a ball to the left side for a basehit single. She runs through the orange/white firstbase bags. Turns around and walks back to the bags. As the firstbase coach is talking to her, the ump hollers "baserunner is out!". The baserunner was standing on the orange safety bag and not the white bag. She was called out for not returning to the white bag within something to the tune of 7 seconds. Oh BTW, 12u ASA nationals. Whats up with this call?

    BAD CALL

THE RUNNER IS NOT OUT !!! THE BAG IS PART OF THE UNIT,IT WAS ONLY INSTITUTED FOR THE FIRST BASEMAN AND THE RUNNER NOT TO COLLIDE,EITHER BAG IS OKAY TO STAND ON.IT WOULD BE A DISADVANTAGE FOR THE RUNNER TO STAND ON THE ORANGE BAG,BUT SHE IS NOT OUT !!!

    ?

You may be wrong on this one Link. I believe in ASA, that after the play at first, the runner is to return to the White base only. I don't have my rule book handy at the moment, but when I coached in ASA tournaments, it was always told to us that way at pregame by the Umps. I'll double check though.

The Reason I say This ----

I 've seen kids standing on half and half and were not called out, but maybe being in contact with the white bag institutes being on the correct bag...you may be right C.G.... how's it going down there in the great upstate ??? remember what I told you---SHHHHHHHH !!!!!

Bad Call! And if the ASA rule says white bag, bad rule! Either correct the rule or remove the orange bag!

In any level or organization, the orange base is only in play 1 time...when the runner runs through the bag. After the runner has run through 1st base, the orange base essentially disappears and the only bag in play is the white one. A runner has a set amount of time to return to the white base only. Standing on ONLY the orange base does not count. Standing on both bags counts because they are in contact with the white base.

While it may seem nit picky, it was the right call by the umpire.

While it may be technically the right call, it had no bearing on the game and the umpire should have remained invisible. One thing that really stinks is an umpire that envokes his presence in a game. They get paid to police the game, not show off their knowledge or authority. Rules are rules, but you have to use some common sense...No bearing, no call.

    Balderdash!

Actually, according to ASA rules (2.3.H and 8.3.M most appropriate), the runner was safe. The whole thing is called a double bag, and the only time the two halves are treated any differently is when there is a play at the bag with a throw coming from fair territory, the runner must touch the orange portion and the defense the white (or on a play when the firstbaseman has to go into foul territory to catch the ball, then the sides are reversed).

The orange bag doesn't "disappear" when the batter-runner passes first, as one poster stated, it would be more accurate to say that it's "orange-ness" disappears and it becomes just one big white bag.

If all is as exactly as stated in the OP, then the umpire was just plain wrong.
