The umpiring in the first Wayne-Cherryville game was possibly the worst i've ever seen at that level. That crew would not have made it out of the first day of the Stevie Wonder School of Umpiring. I was sure both coaches were going to get tossed.

We gott he same crew for the Caldwell game, and the one thing all could agree on was that these guys were bad.

And as a commissioner said to me, that was part of the reason for what followed.

Brad Reaves made a comment abut something to the home plate ump, and Hamby told him to shut up, allegedly. Reaves fired back. I heard him say, "I'm about tired of your mouth." And we know that was well-received by the Post 29 crowd.

Two other incidents that I recall as related, though I could be wrong. Josh Severt hit a grounder foul up the first base line, and catcher Tyler Ham's throw hit him. Mr. severt tried but was prevented from telling Mr. Ham that he was the next Johnny Bench.

IIRC, Caldwell reliever Andrew Berry hit the top of Jackson Massey's bat with a pitch. Of course, it came somewhat close to the noggin. Mr. Massey took a few steps towards the mound to compliment Mr. Berry on his control but was retained by the gentleman wearing the tools of ignorance. Both benches cleared amidst animated discussion.

    What a mess.

Too bad the umpiring wasn't better for a game at this level... how does this happen?

Tried to warn yall when you mess with the bull you get the horn. What a run by Post 100. Timely hitting and solid pitching put them trough to the title. As some seen that heat and stress brought out the worst in some folks. It all comes down to who manages this situation better. And who else would you want managing a squad ............................................... I'll take the ol goat farmer any time over what I have seen anywhere in the state.

    GREAT ARTICLE

I was so please that the writer took the time to talk to some of the players and fans. So many times the reporter shows up, takes a few pictures and writes a little of the story of the game missing out on alot. The fact that he put the attention where it belongs, on the young men playing the game, brought to light another point. These young men are the same age as the ones who have fought for and died for our country. Our young men play a game of baseball that pays tribute to the military veterans of our land. I am proud that my son has played American Legion baseball. This was his last year to play. He is 18 years old and could be at war right now but for baseball. He is going into his 2nd year at Blue Ridge Comm Coll playing baseball and has offers to go on after his 2 years are up to keep playing. Other parents of 18 year-old kids right now don't get to see them because they are in the military keeping us safe here at home. I will miss watching my son play Legion ball but I will support our team next year and the years to come because I believe in what it stands for.

Talent wise I feel Caldwell has had the best and most talent of any area in the NC. South Caldwell is always loaded and then they add players from the other HS's. Why don't they produce Championship legion teams year in and year out? I don't understand this. I have been thinking about this and I have come to two conclusions why they may not. One, team chemistry and two, coaching staff. I don't know about the team chemistry other than the fact that the entire South Caldwell state championship team started for the legion team. So I guess we can rule that one out, team chemistry is not a problem. It must be the coaching staff. I have heard a lot of grumblings about the coaches. There were a lot of situations where they could have applied pressure or made something happen, but they don't understand those situations. It's obvious they seem like they don't know how to do things. The Braves have won a lot of pennants, but only one world series. Caldwell has won multiple area titles, but how many state championships have they won. 2 or 3 the last twenty years, they should have many more. They should have a dynasty like no other legion team in this state. They need new coaches to lead this baseball county into a dynasty era.

It sure doesn't help when the best player in the county is picked 10th in the major league draft. I disagree with the coaching comments. I am a Cherryville fan (and also Rowan since I grew up there), but I have always been impressed with Caldwell's team fundamentals and spirit. They appear to me to have fine coaches, although I don't see them on a day in, day out basis.
