I understand the definition of the "DEAD PERIOD" , but is it really necessary ??? Can a high school coach really pressure a kid in his or her decisions, and if a coach really wants to get infornmation to a kid all they got to do is pick up the phone and call him or her..you know it is the 21st century--DUH???...technology is available...LOL

We can talk to them al we want during a "Dead Period" We cannot coach them in any way. Be it travel ball or hitting or pitching lessons and it does not matter if they were on the team roster or not if they are enrolled in the school you coach at, even as a rising freshman you can't work with them in any form. It's one of those rules that keep coaches from working the girls at their (the coaches) sport and trying to keep them from trying out for another sport. I don't agree with it but can understand the reasoning behind it.
    Hope this helps

The dead period is supposed to prevent coaches from pressuring kids to play only one sport. It probably has a bigger impact at smaller schools and lesser impact at larger schools. Encouraging kids to play multiple high school sports is great, but that leads to them never attaining their full potential in anything. It takes a year round plan to acheive excellence, especially in our sport. In the off season, they need periods of personal skills development, conditioning, maybe some low pressure fall travel ball, and even time away from sports altogether to get ready for the intensity of the pre-season and the regular season... especially in the more advanced programs.

This comes up every year at this time. The dead periods are probablly the worst rule in NC High School sports. It really serves NO purpose. I know what it is supposed to do but it really does nothing. If a kid wants to play different sports they are going to do it. All this rule does is penalize the players and coaches who want to play summer ball during the month of August. November isn't as bad but still hurts especially with pitchers who may be working with their coach who is on staff. Stupid rule!!!!!!!!!!!

    What would happen?

I don't know all of the NC HS rules but was just wondering how this dead period effects teams that may qualify for a national tournament that takes place in August? If a high school coach is also coaching a travel team, if any of his/her kids are playing on that team and they qualify for ASA nationals, can they continue to coach through that tournament or do they have to step aside mid tournament?

    Dead Period Saga Continues--------------------

I think that someone that had clout had a difficulty filling up volley ball or basketball teams in the fall developed this outlandish rule...really it doesn't prevent anybody from anything...if so what is the penalty for a high school coach to ignore the rule?? Can anybody out in TBR land give me a high school that totally follows the high school Do's & Dont's concernig sports?? I guarantee if this applied to football it wouldn't mean a hill of beans to any high school official. High school politics are out there folks, and following the rules for some are well like...:juggle: . I heard recently from a good friend of mine that if you weren't in their inner circle of families than you are wasting your time playing for this certain high school. SO SAD !!!!!

We follow it at our high school. There are people out there that will report you. If you don't follow the rules, what does that tell you players? Cheat to win? Not me

Its my understanding that sometimes exceptions are granted, but NCHSAA reviews them on a case by case basis. Its almost certain that such a team would have to include the coach's daughter.

    I don't Follow -----???????

I don't get where this is cheating vs. pressuring kids to play ball based on the rule....okay point in case....how many of you drive 65 mph on the interstate where it is posted ??? I purposely drove 65 mph one day just to show my family I was the only one obeying the law, nobody I mean nobody was driving 65 mph if they were driving under 80 mph it would have surprised me. Now what is my point, a kid / parents are going to do what they want no matter what a coach tries to pressure them to do or not to do.I have never met a coach that told a kid she couldn't play other sports while this certain sport was going on anyway, the rule is stupid, and if you were to go back in history I guarantee it was put in force by a CONTROL FREAK..:taz:

being reported has been by people at your own school has happened in our conference. kinda like that "if i cant do it either can you" thing. I personally dont like the rule, but adhere to it. i just get my senior players to guide the practices during the dead periods and dont come near the field.
