Coaching by proxy during the dead period. Is that legal? I don't like the rule either, but it seems that's sliding around the rule and doing what the rule is trying to stop. ...Just asking.

Well, the rules as our AD sees it states that no coach can be around any of their players during the dead period. it doesnt say anything about team captains leading a practice. it also states that in a non-dead period, you cannot have anymore than 8 players on the field/school at any one time with a coach. It also states that you cant have practice going on at two different fields at the same time to skirt the 8 at a time rule, and you cant have conditioning at one location and practice at another at the same time. conditioning is different, there is no limit to how many players you can have at conditioning, but..... you cant condition during a dead period as a coach.... if i have more than eight players show up for a practice, i leave as required. conditioning is defined as physical exercise with no equipment, no balls, tee's, gloves, bats, etc.

i would love to hold practices everyday, three hours a day, my kids would love to do this also, but it would interfere with volleyball and basketball.

most agree, the rules need to be changed, but how do you do this and still be fair to the other sports???? in our little 3A school, athletics play multiple sports and it doesnt seem fair for the volleyball players to miss practice for that sport to practice for softball. in fact, the coaches dont allow it due to the risk of injury which is understandable. but in my humble opinion, if you're not playing another sport and have no intention to do so, you should be able to practice those players without penalty.

if you dont start practice until the month of feb/apr (cant remember when we start now), you wont have a competative team at all in most cases.

    Exactly !!!

This rule can't really be enforced, just like the entire interstate can't be patrolled, even though I'm the one that usually gets caught for speeding---LOL..Technology folks, you can't stop technology, who can police text messaging from the parking lot,but we are getting off the subject who I've been told that I'm notorius of doing by my critics..I just think it's silly that all the great coaches have to sit idle because we don't want little Suzy to feel pressured to play softball ( IE.) when she is playing (9) other sports. Man which is worst little Suzy running herself to death playing every sport offered at school--HMMMM--Burnout I believe that is what it's CALLED !!!:flameme:---------- Suzy her senior year !!!!

Here is Suzy's Schedule.....:cheer: :nopity: :basket: :juggle: :bike: :donatello:

Whoops scratch this one-----:loveys: ---- boyfriends got to GO !!!

Cheeze, we are not talking about skipping anything, but let the coaches coach the teams, our coach would never pressure a kid to miss her practice as long as it was that time of year...now playing basketball in JUNE for AAU ---yes they should decide which they want to play ----Softball or Basketball !!!!

Let me tell you the worst part of this rule. If you are a volunter coach and not paid at a school. Then you coach a travelball or any other type team in the summer when August comes you have to quit if coaching any of the players on the school team you help with. Now is it just me or is this really bad. A volunter who gives their time can't coach the players on their free time when school is not even in (out for the summer) during August. The nchsaa should have absolutley no say in this matter but they do. I don't think their should be any dead period but when they try to rule on what non school employes do on their own time that is gonig way to far!!!

    Agree

I admire all U that volunteer to help schools, rec facilities, and travel ball teams work with the kids! We should all give without expecting a return but that can't always be the case. It gets really expensive to attend every practice, every game, travel all over but somehow many of U do it!
Thanks for the true softball junkies! Have a great fall season.

Not everyone sticks to the dead period rule. I know of some that coach travelball during Aug. I went to a tourney up in Lenoir this weekend and saw the South Caldwell coach coaching the Spartan team. Was this weekend not a dead period or did they have clearance to do this

    Not sure

I was there on Saturday also as I have a 18U travel team with two of my high school players on it. I don't like the rule-especially when it effects my entire team over two kids. The rest of them come from Charlotte, G-boro, T-ville, Marion. I had to sit in the stands and watch, and I'm 99.9% sure that's what the SC coach did too.

I watched some of there games, Hibriten was also there with a parent coaching, watching the kids play and just hanging out with them is not illegal as long as you are not instructing.

    I think the rule is.....

I think the rule is a waste of time, JMO!! Because like Guru posted, who is going to patrol it, other than your opponets (other teams or other sports)! If we are all honest, then we all know of programs that do not follow the rule!!! It isn't something that only happened once and it will happen a 100 times a minute, again. I personally think that if a kid wants to play 2 or more sports, good for them! No one ever questioned a boy for wanting to play football, wrestling, basketball and/or baseball! He is applauded for it!! What exactly is wrong with letting the girls practice year round if they want to? Wouldn't the teams be batter that way? Oh I guess since it is girls then they can't. Well the rule will change when someone's (a High up) DD wants to practice softball and Daddy is the coach! You know what they say "rules are made to be broken"! I could name three programs that break the rule every year, if I wanted to, or cared! It is an outdated rule that should stop being a rule! Again, JMO please no hate mail!!
