Thanks Pop For Your Smarts, Can You Help Here?...

...if I were still coaching TB and helping at my DDs HS, how would it become official as to me being a non-paid parent volunteer? I entertained the idea to help out when DD was in middle school and the AD sent me down the road of an application/personal character check. I'M ALL FOR THAT BTW. Anyway, is there some concrete factor, that places a good intentioned parent trying to give time to the kids, into the structured environment of the recruiting world? And how might one go about giving their time without jeopardizing the very kids he/she is trying to help? TBR needs your help friend! Marlin

    To Marlinfan

If you are a recognized member of the High School staff, if you work with the pitchers, if you work with the infield, outfield, sit in the digout, sit on a bucket, or get your picture made with the official team picture, you are considered as a member of the staff and under the same dead period restrictions as the Head Coach according to the letter of the rule. Paid or non-paid does not matter. If you are considered as part of the "staff", dead period rules apply to you as well. Hope this is what you were asking!

when my dd went on to hs some years ago, it was explained exactly as Pop has put it, they went even farther and stated that if you kept the scorebook in the stands, you're part of the staff, paid or not.

One thing to say. They are girls, they'll do what they want to do anyways. Do all those dads out there agree? Especially for the ones that want their dd's to continue to play in college.

Are coaches really paid? Lol that's not even enough for the case of beer you want to drink after one practice. LOL

    Thanks Pop. and...

...I think its safe to assume that if any non-paid volunteer is helping out, its not bringing water to the games. Of course they are working with the pitchers, infield, etc. Being "considered part of the staff" is to be determined how? Coaching first/third, I can see that would be a "public" way to be considered staff. But I'm still not clear as to the subjective nature of when a parent is considered staff. And if the best rule interepretation that can be found in the books as you, respectfully, have stated above, then theres holes everywhere for skirting around the rule. And quite easily IMO. No dog in the fight. Just an interested fastpitch fan. BTW, Thanks for all you do to help promote fpitch!

    Head Coach's responsibility

I understand what you are saying and know that you are correct. But it is the responsibility of the Head Coach to make sure his "staff is in compliance". Everything sails along until someone gets caught. At that point it is no longer something to joke about. I know coaches and schools who have been in this situation. As stated before, the NCHSAA does not spare the rod in these cases.
