OMG, the college coaches that i personally know arent that stupid to believe the hype from any source. If they hear something about a particular player, they go to look, not just once, but many times. As for the "players in the shadows" thing, people like myself have worked for several years to get these players given a chance to play at the next level because we're all they have to bring them into the light so to speak. I helped place a player in a D2 school who had never been looked at by anyone, yet is highly looked upon by the coach and her peers. I have heard from more than one college coach, they would rather have a diamond in the rough than a nova burning brightly. diamonds are easier to work with.

interesting for a first post, agree with dawgswood, is this a statement or a question, and is this statement based on a personal event or just a general viewing????

I'm 100% sure there are kids that fall through the cracks. That is because they haven't played in front of or marketed themselves to college coaches. Like Cheeze said, the coaches are not going to take someone based on what they have heard or read. We've had three kids early sign from the Sun Devils, one more just got an offer yesterday. Everyone of the coaches have followed the players all summer to make sure they really fit their programefore making an offer..

    Simple

Yes there are! The parents, player, and coach have to sell their kid to the college coaches by constantly sending e-mails, letters, tapes, etc. The exceptional kids as U say "stick out" but the vast majority have to have help to reach their dream. Approach your task of getting recruited as U would if you were seeking that wonderful job! SELL YOURSELF as the best candiate for the position, work hard, hustle, dive when needed, spend time working on your hitting, if U can hit, especially with power, colleges will find a spot. Get your profile in order, have a game plan, and never stop sending e-mails to the schools U want to attend. Also, "apply to the school", extremely important! The coach needs to know U are serious.
Well maybe I went to far and got off the subject but I think all players have a spot, if they are willing to work and to be flexible.

This is a wide open subject with all. Yeap, i agree, ya hear someone's name enough, it equates fame, but most college coaches go past that and get a good look for themselves. hype is just that, hype. performance is what counts to a college coach followed by the ability for a player to be coached.

we have this discussion several times a year. the discussion about selling yourself with video's, emails, letters and phone calls. more and more of the players are taking our advice and guidance and getting the attention they deserve. some wait until the last minute and use the recruiting services, which is another discussion altogether.

but hyping a kid only puts more pressure on them to achieve that level of play. i know of several girls who made it to college and utterly fell apart trying to live up to the expectations, and many coaches have had to deal with this issue.

but dont fool yourself, a college coach who recruits on hype is only a college coach for a short time.

I learned a long time ago...

A ballplayer has two reputations. One with the other players and coaches, and one based on the press, parents and hype. The first is based on ability. the second is based on what the newspapers give them.

    Sometimes they are both right.
