One would have to be crazy not to have an agent negotiate with a ML club. The time, stress and uncertainty would definately weigh heavily on a player's mind and effect their game and personal relationships.

There is so much an agent does behind the scene. In Madison's case, it was a 2 year process. But the good news about his signing...............he can now afford to take me to Beefmastor's and I can get a 6 inch steak.

    These posts

are based on the assumption that a kid is going to be stupid with his money. In that case it does not matter how much you get. If you think you can negotiate a million dollar contract with ML attorneys that get paid to get you for the least amount possible then go right ahead. Im sure ML baseball would be very happy if everyone took that approach. I wonder why?

Thanks for saying what I wanted to say. Some people may not like lawyers but the good ones earn their money and then some. Reading this thread I just about fell over.

I understand the positives and negatives of hiring an agent. What i was curious about was if it was as noticeable to enyone other than me with the lack of american born players on major league and minor league rosters. I was wondering if it was because of the lack of talent or in my opinion money.

I have the OPINION that MLB teams will sign the best players. Everyone wants to win. They may be able to get players from Latin America for less money (I don't know this as fact) but if they see a player they want they will find a way to sign him. Maybe they over pay a couple hundred thousand but that's nothing if they believe the player can help them win. And that comes from my two friends who are agents, and for top level players.

    The numbers as of 2006

    Whites - 59.4 %
    Hispanic - 29.4 %
    Black - 8.4 %
    Asian - 2.8 %

American born players make up 67.8 % of ML rosters. I dont see this is a lack of American born players on rosters at all. What I do see as a telling trend is the lack of African American kids on ML rosters. Add to this that only 3.2 % of college baseball rosters are African American kids.

A lot of this is speculation

But....a lot of it does have to do with who is working for you (agent and financial advisors).

Uncle Sam is going to get his....but, a good financial advisor can soften the blow based on how the bonus is paid out....you can do certain things to change what state the tax rates are based on etc.

Minor league salariies are going to be the same from one team to the next for "Rookie, Single A, Double A, Triple A etc"....the initial money is in the signing bonus and how the player manages it.

Housing for minor leaguers is usually handled by the club where they are playing at the time and helped with some of the cost in most cases or matched up with roomies to cut down on the cost....in some areas even host families help out.....I don't think most guys are going to buy a place because their is no guarantee on how long they will be there.

Bottom line is $2 million bucks is $2million bucks anyway you want to slice and dice it....how well it is managed after all is said and done will be completely left up to the individual and who is taking care of the bank.

If I remember correctly Braves leaves an open invitation to manage any and all funds......:hyper:

One would hate to think that everything Jackie Robinson faced, fought, endured and sacrificed for years and years....was all for naught.

Pirate brings up an interesting point, though. At what point will the american audience lose interest in major league baseball due to an abundance of foreign players? or will it not matter?

As far as signing foreign players is concerned, keep in mind that their bonuses have skyrocketed in recent years. The best foreign prospects each year routinely get over $1 million and up to $2.5 mil, so it isn't like it used to be where you could get a potential All-Star for 250k.

You are correct, sir!...and remind Ryan that check I owed him is in the mail..I think...probably....maybe...well, if he doesn't get it soon, tell him to contact my accountant, Bubba Bugliosi. Bubba's not too good with money, but he's great on collecting it.

Just remember...the word, fund, is an adverb for the word "fun"...and that's my motto on my door knocker. Braves Counting Services---we manage your money so you can have fun now...because you can't take it with you.

And one of the services we provide is for every $4 you have, we only take $2 for ourselves and put one other $1 in our "protected" savings account. That way, when you go broke, you're not really broke...see? me and Bubba our financial geniuses!

Oh, and did I tell you we were thinking of branching out into an Insurance Agency. We were thinking that we would buy a policy in your name, list us as the beneficiary and in return you will get lifetime floor seats for the Charlotte Hornets at the new Charlotte Coliseum. They've got a pretty good team with Muggsy and Alonzo this year.
