You're right. Nothing will work for everyone. But it could work for the majority if done on weekends. If baseball parents think their kids are being held back by football players and soccer players during football and soccer season (fall), then may we need to have football practices and soccer practices during baseball season (spring time).

 

Then When??

I guess the question becomes when is the perfect time for a league like this? Let's practice on weekends, "can't had a football game last night need the rest." Let's move the season to start after football season, "can't what about the boys who play basketball." Then comes winter, "can't weather is to unpredictable." How about spring then, "can't that's when regular baseball practice starts".
It's a tail chaser, there is no perfect time, but it is a great idea and we all should embrace it. It will help the coaches and it will help the kids that can play, that should be enough.

Agree Threetwo...great post and well said. I don't think you can say the majority are free on the weekends, or the majority are free during the week. It's a new concept, the boys will be playing, and it sounds great.

 

But if you had it on weekends at least all the kids have a CHANCE to be there. If they choose not to attend then it's their choice. Right now they don't have that choice.

 

That's assuming that all sports activities are during the week. The kids who have weekend activities would not have the chance to be there.

 

Unless there is a rainout, there is no football, soccer or cross country on Saturdays or Sundays. If someone has another non-school sport activity then they have to make a choice. What's the next excuse?

 

Thoughts from the Triangle

Unless it's changed the Scholastic League around here was/is just a summer league. My son, as a rising senior two seasons ago, played with his school team during the week and with the DB's at showcases and tournaments, mostly on the weekends. His HS coach had no problem with that as he knew the best chance for exposure was with the DB's.
On the other hand, his junior fall season he played in the Greater Fall League. The team was based in Durham and was rather pourly put togather, but, it was a place to play. Before the season started, we let the coach know that my son was going to miss one or two games due to attending showcases and he was fine with that as well. But... the dude that ran that division found out about it (he didn't know the player's name but just that a player was going to a showcase) and had a cow. He wanted the player "banned for life" from the league! My son's coach would not give this guy his name so that really pissed him off! Needless to say, we were done with Greater Raleigh after that season, and playing with the DB's got my son the chance to be seen by the right folks. He's sweating through fall workouts at a D-I program and still chasing his dream.
That, to me, is what it is all about... helping the boys chase their dreams.

 

Choices

Chioces are all up to the individual. Chosing to play weekend sports is one choice, and choosing to play football, soccer, basketball, etc. during the week are also choices. There is not one single correct choice for all people because the right choice is what is best for each individual and those are personal decisions. Kids today are fortunate that they have so many options.

 

The guy in Raleigh has no business running the program. If a kid leaves for a showcase, it's his choice. At least he had the choice.

 

Everyone has choices....Some boys choose football, some boys choose cross country and some boys choose soccer, we are talking about the boys that choose baseball. Those that choose to play muliple sports cannot have a negative impact on those that choose to focus on one, baseball. Those boys that choose multiple sports will have their opportunity to shine during the regular season or they can play AAU/USSSA/Showcase/Legion...etc during the off seasons. This is not a school activity and is not being funded by the schools, it's just another league and it's just baseball. I have to restate my original thought in that there is no perfect answer nor is there a perfect time, there will always be something else that this new league will interfer with no matter what times you choose.....Let's play ball!!
