    Great Post

SPOT ON! Could not have said it better. There are young men and families out there who need to rethink their commitment to their teams. I know a young man who did not commit early because he wanted the scouts to keep coming in order for his teamates to have a better chance of being seen.

    Sad Fact

A big fault of the human race.....we quickly forget who helped us get there when we can say........ "I" have arrived.......please remember that "I" is nothing without others.

I would say this fits a lot more than most will admit. There are those who go without any thanks and sometimes dirt in their face while others have taken their credit. Not sour grapes here. I just hate see others taking and giving credit from those who have made their job easy. This is more toward coaches and teams that come in and offer the promise land to players. Yes, it is the player and parents that say yes. Why? It is a sad fact that if you put 16 superstars together they will be seen. And even if one player is not equall to the others. He will be seen as a player on that superstar team. This takes away from those teams that have one or two players that are never seen because everyone is looking at the superstars.:cowboy:

I fail to see what your post has to do with this thread.

Spell check on the game of Life

"I" have already made it so "I" don't need you anymore......must be a good reason why the word idiot starts with an "I"

    Coach,

    I agree with you 100%....

The question I have though is why has this changed....I'm also "old school" and back when I was playing it was always "Team" first. You still had your superstars in every sport but the Team and your Team mates were always first. What caused todays athlete to be so selfish?

In today's world, people thrive off of acceptance. Whether that be acceptance by a group or acceptance because of who you are and what you do. Succeeding in something, and succeeding enough so that you are better than your competitors, sometimes even teammates and friends, gives your pride every opportunity to come out of check. We think we're doing it all on our own...if we could all just remember Who made us and the gifts and talents He has blessed us with.

    commitment and passion

I think I know where this is coming from... a dad of a younger player talked to me about it. He, like you and me Coach, has a "old school" mindset, and, as is often the case, his son (like yours and mine) seems to have inherited those same genes. The kid wants to be part of the team!
The opportunity to get personal exposure playing on these high level teams is an obvious reason for doing so. But, I truely believe that besides the basic skills of running, throwing and hitting, the coaches and scouts that watch these teams do take note of a player's passion for the game and his ability to be a part of the team.
Last year my son got his chance to play and it resulted in him getting the opportunity to play beyond high school. What is interesting is he still feels a part of that organization, as do I. The reason for this is teammates. There are players and families I am certain will be friends for life.
Those that can detach themselves from a team, without consideration for that group of players, will miss out on a big part of the joy of playing this great game... being a teammate.
In Tony LaRusa's book, "Three Nights in August", he talks about J. D. Drew and his seeming lack of passion and his distant attitude towards the team. There is a comprison to David Eckstein and LaRusa's opinion of who is the better MLB player is obvious. It's the one with the passion and commitment. Can you guess which one it is?
