As long as the unpaid volunteer is not a member of the coaching staff

    "loop holes"

There are many "loop holes" in the rules for ALL sports. It all depends on how the school and it's "supporters" allow off-season workouts.

Any individual who coaches at an NCHSAA member high school, head or assistant, paid or non-paid, faculty or non-faculty, parent volunteer, etc., must abide by the skill development, out-of-season workout rules. If a high school coach, regardless of the sport he or she coaches at the high school, also coaches an “outside” or “club” team, whether head or assistant, and has any athletes from the high school on that outside team, he cannot
work with any of them during a dead period, and is limited to no more than the sport-specified limit of them per day in an out-of-season workout.

    Nice post!!!!!

Thanks for clearing that up. There are many schools out there who break this rule year in and year out. This post will effect a lot of schools around this area.

    Thanks!:stirthepot::surrender::detective:

I know it goes on and the concerns people have in finding quality HC's for their school can be a problem. So, I hope nobody turns others in...but you know how that goes.

People are trying to help the ladies in softball become better players, but there is always someone with an axe to grind....so be careful about the loopholes. They can come back and bite you.

Very nice info and well said....

First of all, nice posts! My hat is off to you for the research done. Is there a gray area with certain travel ball teams who ONLY have players within their school district? I am not naming names or programs, I think it's great to have a program like that. I know that with wrestling we are not allowed to let the middle school practice with the high school, but we can have seperate mats in the gym and run dual practices at the same time. AS LONG AS there is a divide between sections and the younger ones don't end up on the wrong mat.

Also, if a coach is coaching another sport and the girls come out to "run" while the coach is with the other team, how does that play into things? EXAMPLE- I coach wrestling and in the past, players have come into the gym to run or lift(seperate from us) on there own, but still seen by many as being around a coach. We do have two gyms and a seperate weight room. The wrestling team has their own room and supplies.

Feel free to pm me if you choose not to reply here. I come in peace.

You can watch '"open fields" or in this case "open gym". As long as you are not coaching them, then it is fine. Most people wouldn't even think to turn in a school, but there is always that "one".

So, can players be around a coach...yep. As long as the coach is not offering comments or instructions.

But keep in mind, except for the small window of "dead periods", you may alternate or practice up to 8 players Monday-Friday...I leave in peace

By the way, schools are forming teams and leagues called "Metro Leagues". It is an approved organization by the NCHSAA to allow a coach from his/her school to field teams. There are more details about that, but basically it allows them to play and stay together. It has received mixed reviews and it appears to be in just a few markets. But it is new, there are many teams competing and it's still presented as a "showcase" league.

    The results so far:

-Able to save money due to less travel
-Able to continue to play against high calibre players
-Keep players together with their coaches
-Their tournaments invite all colleges to attend and seem to be doing pretty well in the baseball side in having them come

Now, before anyone asks, I have no affiliation with the Metro leagues at all. I won't even say that I endorse it. But it is another option and some families are looking to go this route instead.
