I copied this from one of the members on the baseball side. Coaching is coaching, so the character and content remain the same:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
What makes a great coach? I would say the same qualities that make a great dad or mom. Only with a coach your road is the game taught but the destination is teaching life lessons through the game. First of all I feel that a great coach has a passion for the game. A passion for teaching the game. A passion to help young men or women become the best players they can be. I also feel that a great coach understands that his job is not to just teach the game but to use the game as a way to teach young men and women about life through the game. Work ethic , dedication , team work , discipline , mental toughness , sportsmanship etc. I believe that the same things that make a kid sucessful on the diamond are the same things that make him or her sucessful in life. I also believe that a great coach is not consumed by winning but by teaching. The winning takes care of itself if you take care of the other things that are more important in the long run. Of course we all want to win. But unless you win the State every year are you saying that every season you dont is a failure? I say that if you are helping young boys become men and you are teaching them life lessons along with the game of baseball you never have a bad season regardless of the record. My coaches in youth sports High School and College were some of the biggest positive influences in my life. I have forgotten alot of the fundementals of the games that they taught me. But I have never forgotten the principals of life that they taught me through the game. I use them even today , everyday. (Never quit). (Discipline yourself so other wont have to). (Winning is an attitude). ETC ETC ETC. Too many times people get caught up in how many games they have won and lost. Of course we want to win and it is very important that we do because we are all competitors. But what is most important is that we teach young men and women lessons through the game that will last them long after they hang up the spikes. JMHO

A Coach after my own heart!!

Braves you said a mouthful. I've said those exact words on more than one occasion to my players and especially parents over the last several years. I firmly believe that our work ethic, dedication to the task at hand, self discipline, mental toughness and the ability to work together as a team all are molded into our children at an early age. Sadly you can tell the ones who have not been exposed to it where ever you go. It doesn't matter if you are the person working at McDonals flipping Hamburgers or the CEO of a major corporation we have to attempt to be the best at whatever we do in life. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand to be the loser any more than the next person, but if our team puts forth the best effort we can, and it is not enough, than I am the first to congratulate the other team. I've always told my own DD and our teams that success is not always measured by the Wins and Losses, but by the personal accomplishments that we all receive from time to time. Most times it's just a pat on the back and a nice little acknowledgement of the effort. It's kind of like when you're stuck in traffic and you stop to let someone else out even though you are already late. All you really want in return is the little hand wave saying thank you.

As a coach I think we all get caught up in the records too many times. The single biggest reason I got involved with coaching was because of how several coaches in my youth (many years ago) affected me. Some positive and some not so positive. I do know that even when I was on losing teams the positive ones generally taught me the most.

I currently coach a team that has a young lady that has a bit of a disability, and I semi-regularly get comments for having the courage to put her on the team. I graciously accept the positive remarks, but I quickly try to point out the fact that she is an accomplished ball player, that just happens to have a slight diability. Best of all she is an inspiration to me and the rest of the team.

    WAY TO GO COACH.......

    I APPLAUD you!!!! :clap::clap::clapclap::clapclap::worshippy::worshippy::cheer::cheer::hurray::hurray:
That is the kinda thing I like to hear about a coach!
It is nice to hear that there are still coaches out there, that have the morals and ethics to do the RIGHT thing, to keep this player on your team. I bet she has this slight disability, but makes up for it 1000%, with try, heart and attitude! Which is more than can be said for a lot of the, pampered prema donna's, out there!
Good Luck to you and your team!

    Know yourself.....

A true coach guides a team, they don't rule a team.

They chart a course, give directions and try to create an atmosphere where all can learn and grow. The coach must have a strong sense of vision, passion and the ability to get people to commit 100% to a goal.

    Communicate well....
    1. Walk the walk with your athletes and parents. Never use "abusive techniques" as a "teaching tool."
    2. Take time to listen to your athletes and parents
    3. Be passionate about all aspects of the sport... it's infectious
    Open Door Policy
    1. Coaches are educators and coaching is a specialized form of teaching. Teach life skills.
    2. Understand the individual differences in your athletes.
    3. Be flexible
    Ability to Teach
    1. Keep the learning environment safe.. physically and emotionally.
    2. Know how to teach the sport and MAKE IT FUN.
    3. Use mistakes and failures as teaching opportunities. Believe in yourself!
    Create a Challenge
    1. Don't tolerate mediocrity, you will lose them to boredom and apathy
    2. Challenge yourself everyday.. your players eyes are on you always.
    3. Motivate your team to the highest levels by offering opportunities, not obligations...ie.. "make them earn their playing time everyday"
    Honesty
    1. Always be honest and conduct yourself with integrity
    2. Don't let your ego or "self-worth" determine an outcome. Learn to listen to criticism or negative feedback so you understand all points of view. You actually might learn something by seeing all points of view.
    3. Keep the game in perspective, coach the person, not just the athlete. Show empathy towards the feelings of your players.
Good coaches know that mistakes and failures are steps that all athletes must overcome for them to learn and see improvement, and ultimately success. A good coach uses these "failures" as feedback as to what a player did wrong and what they need to do differently next time.

    IMO
