I read the NSA rulebook to say a bunt attempt is not a strike unless the bat is moved toward the ball or obviously if the pitch is in the strike zone.

See my cut & paste:
Sec. 14 BUNT ATTEMPT: Any non-swinging movement of the bat intended to tap the ball into play. The mere holding of the bat in the strike zone is not considered a bunt attempt. Unless the batter moves the bat towards the ball, a strike would not be called if the ball is out of the strike zone.

Yet every ump we have encountered automatically calls a strike if the bat is not pulled back. Simply holding the bat in the strike zone will get a strike call every time.

Can anyone explain?

Thanks.

Only a suggestion...

If every ump is ringing your girls up with strikes when they don't pull the bat back when they bunt, I would strongly suggest you coach your kids to pull the bat back. Seems like a simple solution, don't ya think?

Rules ain't perfect...take the interpretation out of the equation.
I guarantee you'll enjoy the game much better!

Wrong...

The batter has to "offer", or in other words, make an attempt. The umps are wrong if it is left in the zone but not "offered" and they call it a strike...
