Big egos make for great coaches and sometimes they bring'em down too.

Channel 3's lead story tonight was about Knotts. They talked to the brother of the guy Knotts did this too and he didn't say much more than has already been published on charlotte.com

But the funny thing coming out of the story was that Channel 3 tried to speak to Knotts via phone tonight but he was not available for comment because he was busy communicating with one of the assistant coaches during tonight's football game. Isn't that also against the rules?

D.A.: Charges won't be filed against Indy coach
    LANGSTON WERTZ JR.
    [email protected]

Mecklenburg County District Attorney Peter Gilchrist said no criminal charges will be filed against Independence High football coach Tom Knotts following an altercation with the parent of one of his players after a junior varsity game last Thursday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has not said whether it will lift its suspension with pay and allow Knotts to return to coaching.

According to people who were at last week's incident, Knotts was talking to his junior varsity team after a 15-14 loss to Butler when the parent began cursing the coach.

Witnesses said Knotts left the huddle and began arguing with the man through a tall chain-link fence.

A Matthews police report says the coach slammed the chain-link fence into the man's face.

Witnesses said they saw the relative, identified by police as Isaac Avant Jr., bleeding around his nose.

Gilchrist said details varied in the witnesses accounts.

"The fan's conduct described by witnesses could provide probable cause for a charge of disorderly conduct, which is conduct that creates the threat of immediate fighting or is likely to provoke violent retaliation," Gilchrist said in a press release.

"The coach's conduct described by witnesses could provide probable cause for a charge of simple assault because the fan was hit by the fence when it was pushed towards him by the coach.

"Due to the fact that neither exercised appropriate restraint and that both contributed to the outcome of the confrontation, it is highly unlikely that either person would be convicted at trial. It would be inappropriate to use limited court time on a matter such as this. Therefore, no charges will be filed."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said Knotts will remain suspended with pay until an internal investigation is completed.
